Schiller Wary Millions Presents Spywire With New Challenge

It all went smoothly for promising colt Spywire in his debut win but jockey Tyler Schiller is bracing himself for a different scenario as he aims to make it two from two in Wednesday’s $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2yo Classic (1100m).

Spywire, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, was scratched as a short priced favourite from the Phelan Ready in Brisbane last weekend, with a minor issue, and again heads the market at $1.60 with TAB on Tuesday for the crucial Magic Millions hitout.

Schiller said he’s excited to see what the $520,000 purchase can do in his second outing especially as he doesn’t think the colt will find the lead easily as he did at Rosehill last month.

“On debut he was very sharp, they didn’t want me to lead but he was just very brilliant,’’ Schiller said.

“He’s a pretty progressive colt, I’m not sure the barrier is going to be that helpful for him because they want him to be ridden with cover.

“So we haven’t had too much luck with gates but he has plenty of natural ability.

“It’s a much anticipated second run, especially after his first and being so brilliant."

Schiller rates Spywire favourably against stablemate Odinson, who he rode to victory in last weekend’s Inglis Nursery at Randwick.

The son of Trapeze Artist has the outside gate in the eight horse field for the Wyong feature, a race that has produced two recent Golden Slipper winners in Farnan and Capitalist, and Schiller said what happens early in the race will be critical to his chances given it's a field with six first starters.

“He’s got a lot of speed, I know they don’t want to really use it because we want to sit behind something,’’ he said.

“We might not have much choice but he’s very straightforward and easy to ride. I feel like he’s better than the colt I rode on the weekend in the Inglis race but that colt’s probably a bit tougher.

“He got a little bit of pressure at Rosehill but he felt like he was doing it so easily. I don’t know how we are going to ride him in behind if he travels that well but we’ll face that obstacle when we come to it.

“His ability will take him a long way and the 1100m at Wyong should suit him pretty well.”

A slight step up in trip is going to be a plus for the in-form Northumbria as he chases a hat-trick in the PBL Law Group Handicap (1100m) after the ex-Godolphin galloper’s upset second-up win over 1000m at Warwick Farm.

Schiller said the Richard Litt-trained gelding made the jump from a Goulburn maiden into the BM68 at the Farm look easy and while he did have a favour or two in the run sees him getting every chance.

“I thought he might have been lacking a bit of quality coming from there but the way he did it was pretty impressive,’’ he said.

“I know the leader jumped the rail and threw its chances away but he’s drawn a good gate which should make a big difference.

“Richard has placed him well and he feels like he will get further, he was off the bit for a lot of the race the other day.”
