Schiller Adamant Briasa's Best Will Blow You Away

By Ray Hickson

Tyler Schiller is confident that one day exciting grey Briasa will “blow away” a top class field of sprinters.

Ideally it would be on TAB Everest Day in four weeks but the comeback jockey is anticipating a preview from Briasa in the Group 2 $1 million Yarraman Park Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday.

“He’s still got plenty of improvement, he’s still a big baby,’’ Schiller said.

“I know he’s five now but he’s still doing things on his own terms. When he finally puts it all together he’s going to explode one day and come out with some remarkable performance.

“What he’s doing off natural talent is scary. I don’t know when the penny is going to drop but if it does in one of these races he could just blow them away.”

It’s an ominous statement ahead of Briasa’s run into the TAB Everest, he’s $4.20 with TAB on Thursday in the Shorts and on the fourth line at $9 in the Everest.

The gelding was the second horse selected for the $20 million sprint, going into the slot owned by Max Whitby and his partners, on the back of his Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes win in the autumn.

Schiller is looking forward to matching motors with the first horse locked in for 2025 – Private Harry. As it happens the two rising sprint stars have drawn alongside each other in the Shorts and Schiller said he plans to make full use of that.

“I think the draw definitely helps, just inside of Private Harry,’’ he said.

“We have enough speed to come out and he should take me where we need to go.

“I think 1100m is his minimum, he’s definitely a fast horse but 1200m is his strength. He’s a big boy and he takes his time to get into stride.

“I’d be expecting Private Harry to be somewhere in advance of us with his gate speed and we just cruise along where he’s comfortable and keep him on the bridle as long as I can.

“If he’s within a couple of lengths of Private Harry it should be a really good match race.”

Like his rival, Briasa has trialled twice and won both hitouts.

Schiller, who rode his first winner midweek since returning from injury, said they’ve been very sharp but he was in foreign territory in his latest trial win where he led all the way over 1000m at Rosehill on September 9.

“He cruised the first 600m then the last 400m I gave him a little click up to keep his mind on the job up the straight,’’ he said.

“He’s very different leading to in behind, he floats along and pricks his ears and doesn’t do too much until asked.

“If something joined him in the trial it probably would have been more of a hit out for him.

“He’s run home sharp considering he was sitting out three quarters off the track, he beat some nice horses and gave a very good feel.”

An unlucky but also promising first-up placing from Husk two weeks ago has Schiller thinking she can atone in the Nick Moraitis Trophy (1200m).

What looked like a smart move to track the odds-on favourite Spirit Of Wealth in the run worked against Schiller when that horse weakened from the turn and he’s adamant it cost Husk her winning chance in the race won by Monte Supreme.

“I rode her a bit cute from a bad draw and she had to go behind a $1.60 shot that didn’t fire on the day,’’ he said.

Briasa wins a Rosehill trial on September 9

“She got out and picked up a bit of ground on them, she had top weight that day too, so I thought her run had plenty of merit.”

Husk rises in class but drops to 52kg on Saturday.

“Down on the featherweight she should be just as effective, she can hopefully put herself in that three or four position and with a little more luck she should take some running down,’’ he said.
