Royal Randwick Double-Header Gives Excellent Track Action

Royal Randwick hosts Group racing this Saturday off the back of a Friday twilight meeting on the Kensington Track as the Australian Turf Club’s Summer Festival Of Racing continues.

The 45th running of the Group 3 $200,000 Fujitsu General Eskimo Prince Stakes and 10th renewal of the Listed $160,000 Darley Lonhro Plate for two-year-olds are the features of a 10-race card at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

It follows a seven-race twilight card on Friday which sees the first race start at 3.20pm and a final race at 7pm in Sydney’s final month of summer.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing and Wagering, James Ross said both meetings at Sydney’s world-famous Royal Randwick offered punters a variety of choice.

“The 45th renewal of the Fujitsu General Eskimo Prince is a significant race heading to autumn and boasts on honour roll in recent years of horses such as Paulele, Kementari, Scissor Kick and Spark of Life," Mr Ross said.

“This year’s Eskimo Prince prizemoney rises to $200,000 along with an increase to $160,000 for the Darley Lonhro Plate on a pathway to the $5 million Longines Golden Slipper.

“Free entry to the Kensington twilight meeting on Friday, or tickets online to a full Saturday card and access to the Winx Stand at Royal Randwick on Saturday, gives punters different options for world-class racing and an atmosphere that only being trackside can offer."

Two highly-promising colts have been well backed straight after final acceptances and head early TAB Fixed Odds betting in the Group 3 Fujitsu General Eskimo Prince Stakes.

Godolphin’s James Cummings trains the well-supported $2 favourite Aft Cabin for Sydney’s champion jockey James McDonald as the stable looks to win this race for the third time in five years.

Leading UK jockey Tom Marquand returns to Sydney ahead of autumn for the ride on second favourite Zou Tiger ($4.20-$3.40) for Royal Randwick trainer John O’Shea.

Aft Cabin is also a strong early favourite for the Group 1 $1 million Randwick Guineas on 4 March. Osipenko for the combination of Sydney’s 12-time champion trainer Chris Waller and top jockey Nash Rawiller is a $9-$8.50 third favourite.

Thirteen of the past 19 winners of the Eskimo Prince Quality have been amongst the first three favourites in betting.

The Listed $160,000 Darley Lonhro Plate – named after one of Australian racing’s greatest and most popular champions – is also a pathway race to Group 1 $5 million Longines Golden Slipper to be run at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 18 March.

I Am Invincible filly Sicilian – trained by Gai Waterhouse (record trainer for Longines Golden Slipper) and Adrian Bott opens a $3.90 TAB favourite with jockey Tim Clark aboard.

Two horses trained by Michael Freedman – Capitalist colt Mexico (jockey Brett Prebble) and I Am Invincible filly Madeira Sunrise (James McDonald) – are both $5 TAB second favourites.

Godolphin’s Exceed and Excel colt Zulfiqar for James Cummings and Tom Marquand is next in betting at $5.50 TAB. Fillies have won the past three renewals of the Darley Lonhro Plate.
