Nominations Soar For Iconic Sydney Spring Races

Nominations for flagship races across Sydney’s iconic spring have added both quality and increased numbers ahead of the record-breaking $66 million Sydney Everest Carnival.

The $10 million Golden Eagle at Rosehill Gardens has attracted a huge rise in nominations for the fourth renewal of the event.

Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club received 199 first entries to date for the Golden Eagle – a 63% rise from last year’s 122, and also well up on nominations for the first two runnings of the innovative race (149 in 2019 and 126 in 2020).

Some of Australia’s very best four-year-olds are also entered including multiple Group 1 winners Anamoe and Converge, along with TAB Everest runner Mazu, and star mares Fangirl and Espiona.

Among this year’s nominations are eight internationally performed horses, including current TAB joint $8 favourite Light Infantry formerly trained by Newmarket trainer David Simcock.

The $10m Golden Eagle – which sees 10% of all prizemoney donated to charities selected by the owners of each runner – is held at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 29 October.

Nominations for three Group 1 races run at Royal Randwick on 1 October during the eight-week $66m Sydney Everest Carnival are also all up on last year;

  • Group 1 $1.5m TAB Epsom (99 nominations – up from 90)
  • Group 1 $750,000 Furphy Metropolitan (87 up from 85)
  • Group 1 $750,000 Darley Flight Stakes (74 up from 59)

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing and Wagering, James Ross said the increase in nominations across all races was a vote of confidence in Sydney’s growing spring.

“It is very pleasing to see such strong growth not only on last year’s numbers but also across six-year averages for all races," Mr Ross said.

“Weights have been released this week for both the TAB Epsom and the Furphy Metropolitan with both races containing great quality and an exciting mix of established and emerging stars.

“The increased prizemoney introduced by Racing NSW this year has added further interest in the Sydney spring program across Australia and Internationally, and with $66 million on offer across the period it is very enticing for connections to compete in Sydney."
