New CEO Appointed NSW Trainers Association

Well-known racing and media identity Richard Callander has been appointed as CEO of the NSW Trainers Association (NSWTA).

Newly-elected NSWTA Chairman, Richard Pegum, said Mr Callander was the perfect fit for the association with his racing knowledge and understanding of what is needed on behalf of trainers in NSW.

“Richard has grown up in racing understanding the industry from the ground up. The board will support him in driving the Association’s vision of delivering better conditions for all participants,” Mr Pegum said.

“Richard’s love of racing has always been evident in his broadcasting and media commitments. With the backing of our members and the board we are confident Richard is the person to deliver positive outcomes for trainers across the state,” he added.

In previous roles, Richard has worked for a wide range of media companies including TVN, Sportsman Newspaper, Winning Post, Just Racing and Chief Entertainment and he continues in his role with Australia’s leading website Racenet and with Sky Sports Radio.

Richard’s previous role prior to heading into the media with Harness Racing NSW gives him a solid understanding of governance structure from a sports governing body.

“I know most of the trainers across the state and I look forward to getting around and meeting and chatting with every trainer about the industry and what we need to do as an association to help them,” Callander said.

“My first priority is to open the communication lines to all trainers and do my best to represent their needs in these challenging times.

“We need to give trainers the backing and support they require in all facets of their business whether they train at Dubbo, Randwick, Wyong, Tamworth, Mudgee or Albury. If trainers have the best facilities to run their businesses the results will flow through the industry.

“I am also looking forward to working with Racing NSW, race clubs and industry bodies to help trainers and the industry.

“I am excited at the challenge ahead and with the backing of the trainers and board of the NSWTA we will make some positive steps.

“The trainers are the linchpin of the industry and we will be doing everything we can to help the entire industry be the best it can.”
