Lane Rates Midways A Buckin' Good Idea

By Ray Hickson

Wyong trainer Damien Lane expects to be a regular participant in the new $100,000 Midway Handicaps and says Saturday’s inaugural running at Rosehill is ideal for both Buckin’ Beauty and Just Field.

Whether the latter lines up is still to be decided by Lane, as he’s considering next week’s Listed Ramornie Handicap for her, but he said the former is ready to find her best after two runs back from a break.

“She had a mixed prep last time but I think she showed she’s getting back to where we want her the other day,’’ Lane said of Buckin’ Beauty.

“These races are ideal for her. They cut a few of the top trainers out and gives us a bit of a chance.”

The Midway concept is restricted to eligible small and medium sized provincial and metropolitan stables.

“We’re all very excited about it,’’ he said.

“I’m happy to cart a horse anywhere to get a return for the owners but at the end of the day we want to be racing in Sydney on Saturdays.

"This race gives a stable like ours an opportunity and I think about nine out of 10 Saturdays we should have a runner there.”

Buckin' Beauty runs third at Canterbury on June 9

Buckin’ Beauty ($19 with TAB on Thursday) is the outsider of Lane’s two acceptors in the Midway Handicap (1100m) but after her second-up third behind Irish Angel at Canterbury he said she’ll give a big sight if she can find the lead.

Apprentice Tyler Schiller takes 3kg off the five-year-old’s back.

“She has blistering gate speed, I think just about every jockey that has ever rode her says she’s one of the quickest out of the gates,’’ he said.

“She just pings the lids and runs. She’s won three in town and she’s a very consistent sort of mare. We probably only have her for a few more runs, she’ll likely go to stud this year.

“If she gets a bit of luck she will be competitive in these races.”

Just Field ($8.50) has been nominated for next week’s Ramornie and Lane said the only reason he’s hesitant about the Midway is the short turnaround from her barrier trial win last Friday, a trial that was necessary after she lost the rider at the start at Randwick on May 29.

The mare, drawn 17 in the Midway, ran fourth in the Listed Hawkesbury Rush three starts ago and Lane is hoping to record a stakes win with her.

“She has so much ability but she is very quirky,’’ he said.

“She came with quite a few problems. You’ve got to work with her, she’s definitely a better girls’ horse and all the girls do most of the work with her at home.

“She’s probably got more ability than any horse I’ve got she’s just quirky. When things go her way she’s up to winning a Listed race.”
