John Schell's Tips For Canterbury (Friday Night)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 5:55PM CAPTIVANT @ KIA ORA HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. All Star is on debut here and has had two trials leading into this, finishing fourth in the latest of them at Randwick when beaten just over one and a half lengths. He’s a well-bred colt and had the advantage of barrier one here. 1. Cobra Club ran well when second on debut in the Inglis Nursery, then backed that up with an 11th in the Inglis Millennium when racing on the speed and weakening. He’s drawn wide but has the speed to overcome that. 2. Good Hotspur debuted with a solid second at Newcastle back in November and has had two trials leading into this return to racing. 10. Gambers is on debut and she won a recent trial at Rosehill leading into this. She bears close watching.

How to play it: All Star EACH WAY.

Race 2 - 6:30PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

6. Hurstville Zagreb looked good in two trials before debuting as a well backed favourite at Goulburn and doing the job well to score a strong win. He steps up quickly in distance for this and looks to have the upside to handle the step up in class. 2. Tapa Kick hit the line well to score a narrow but decisive win at Randwick in Highway grade last time out and has the talent to give cheek again here. 8. Jayashree fought on well to score in maiden grade at Newcastle last time out and bears close watching again. 9. Forever Fortune comes out of the same race as Jayashree and could sneak into the placings.

How to play it: Hurstville Zagreb WIN.

Race 3 - 7:00PM THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

4. O’Ziggy went to the lead and boxed on too strongly to score a win at this track narrowly when last produced. His form before that was also solid and he should take plenty of running down again. 2. Inquiring Minds won here when resuming in November and then won at Randwick two starts later. He had no luck at Wyong last time out and has had a trial leading into this. Expect a bold showing. 3. Barazin has been in form with three wins from his last four starts and he should be in the thick of things again. 8. Fun Sunday should get the run of the race from the inside gate.

How to play it: O’Ziggy WIN.

Race 4 - 7:30PM SHINZO @ COOLMORE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

6. Pinito is yet to miss a place from five starts and resumes here on the back of two trials. She won well at Hawkesbury before being spelled and should be ready to sprint well fresh from the good gate. 3. Battle Hymn won well on debut at Bathurst and followed that up with a close second at Wyong. He should get every chance from the inside barrier. 8. Jupiter Hills resumes having won a maiden at Newcastle before the spell. 9. Lutetia has run well in both runs since resuming and warrants respect.

How to play it: Pinito WIN.

Race 5 - 8:00PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

1. Sydney Bowler is unbeaten from three starts and has looked good racing through the grades. He resumes here after two solid trials and looks hard to beat again from the inside draw. 10. Reasonable led and did the job well to score at Wyong last time out and has claims again. 6. Mafia is an on-pace runner that can give cheek in front, while 2. Huon hasn’t been far away of late and can show up without surprising.

How to play it: Sydney Bowler WIN.

Race 6 - 8:30PM KIA CANTERBURY NIGHT SPRINT SERIES FINAL (1100 METRES)

7. Vegas Raider raced on the speed here last time out and fought on strongly to score a dead heat win with Memoria. He’s drawn a good gate here and should enjoy a nice run in transit. 4. Bundeena has ben close-up in his latest two city runs when fourth on each occasion. He can show up in this. 5. Memoria battled on well to hit the line with Vegas Raider when resuming from a spell and she is worth plenty of thought again. 1. World Alliance was first-up from a spell when running third at Randwick and with the benefit of that run under his belt he should give a sight.

How to play it: Vegas Raider WIN.

Race 7 - 9:00PM ASAHI SUPER DRY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

4. Photograph is lightly raced but has a solid record with two wins and a placing from just the five starts. She won a couple on end at Scone and Sandown in July of last year and resumes in this on the back of two trials in which she has finished fourth each time. She’s drawn the rails here and can return a winner. 6. Gangsta Granny won at Hawkesbury in September at her second start, then resumed from a spell with a strong win at Kembla Grange. This is tougher but she’s on the up and is worth plenty of thought. 1. Mountain Top is first-up from a spell and has won when resuming. She’s had the benefit of two trials and should be ready to run well. 8. Weeping Woman followed up a strong resuming effort at Warwick Farm with a last start win at this track and she can run well again.

How to play it: Photograph WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 4 (6) Pinito.
Race 7 (4) Photograph.

Best Value:
Race 1 (3) All Star.
