Jockey Quotes - Vinery Stud Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $500,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (1850m) at Newcastle.

Hugh Bowman (Fangirl): "It’s lovely to win a Group 1 in the all cerise - the Ingham family obviously huge in racing since before I was around and of course they’ve been with Chris (Waller) and the team for so long, and I’ve ridden so many wonderful horses for them but I think this is actually the first Group 1 - Group 1 winner anyway.

“It was (a tussle). I got to Hinged very easy but I was mindful of timing my run because I could feel there wasn’t a lot left in the tank and when I finally did ask for full effort, I only got a neck in front and Brenton came back to make that margin a little closer but she was so gallant. She’s a lovely filly and she’s been beautifully managed by the master (Waller).”

Fangirl wins the Vinery Stud Stakes at Newcastle

Brenton Avdulla (Hinged): “Tried hard. I knew down the back I was going to be in a bit of trouble when Fangirl was on my back. I thought she would get map favours being in front of her but Hughie obviously rode his great. My girl tried hard. She went well.”

William Pike (Gypsy Goddess): “Very nice run. Race wasn’t run to suit.”

Regan Bayliss (Never Been Kissed): “Really great effort from her.”

Nash Rawiller (Mokulua): “She was in a great spot. Just didn’t appear to have let down in the ground.”

James McDonald (Pretty Amazing): “Just a bit tired after the other day.”

Tommy Berry (Yearning): “She was really good. Just too much ground to make up from that barrier.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Hope In Your Heart): “She was OK.”

Robbie Dolan (Gin Martini): “Blew the start. I thought her run was good from what happened.”

Josh Parr (Stray): “She hates soft ground. She is half the filly on soft ground than she is on dry.”

Rory Hutchings (Pink Ivory): “2000 on Saturday she would have (won easily). Will be very hard to beat in the Oaks.”

Kathy O'Hara (Ellenmac): “Nice run. Probably a little bit away from this grade at the moment. Three or four months time.”

Brock Ryan (Youthfull): “Just a bit sharp for her but I think she’s going to be a filly that will stay.”

Rachel King (Hidden Smile): “Didn’t handle the heavy.”
