Jockey Quotes - TJ Smith Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $3,000,000 Furphy TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

Luke Nolen (I Wish I Win): “He’s pretty impressive. He’s an amazing horse. He didn’t particularly travel well today actually, I was a bit worried. But when we topped the rise he lengthened stride and he gave me a good feel. He’s an exceptional horse, he’s got similar traits to the last one (Black Caviar). Very happy to be a part of it and Moods (trainer Peter Moody) owns half of it and he’s a massive slinger so it’s even better.”

“We were here on trial for that race (The Everest) in the spring so I reckon they’ll be lining up to get him a slot. He’s a beautiful animal and because they’ve given him a lot of time early we’re going to be able to see this horse race on for many years to come hopefully. I’m glad he ended in Moody’s care so I get the opportunity to ride him.”

Zac Purton (Giga Kick): “Very good effort. He ran well.”

Sam Clipperton (Mazu): “I thought he has run terrific. He acquitted himself very well against two exceptional horses in Giga Kick and I Wish I Win. Must admit when I peeled off Nature Strip’s back I thought we had the race won. They obviously had a nice swooping run. The way I know Peter & Paul train, I think he was pretty close to cherry ripe today but I think he will be spot on for his next 1400m assignment.”

James McDonald (Nature Strip): “He ran a bold race.”

Hugh Bowman (Lost And Running): “I thought it was satisfactory given the run that we had first up on the heavy track.”

Brenton Avdulla (Private Eye): “He travelled alright. I was going to glide through with Mazu but got put through the fence a couple of times.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Rocketing By): “Ground probably went against him today.”

Tim Clark (Shelby Sixtysix): “He travelled well until before the turn when I got buffeted. He was turned sideways. It put him out of play.’

Craig Newitt (Lofty Strike): “He ran great. Didn’t really handle the track all that well. He was involved in a little scrimmage coming to the corner. He found the line really well.”

Tyler Schiller (Mariamia): “Cracking run. She showed that she is up to them at WFA.”

Jordan Childs (Passive Aggressive): “She ran honestly. Probably a bit too heavy for her today. Only got tired the last bit. She will be better back on top of the ground.”

Rachel King (Shades Of Rose): “Really honest run. I don’t think the wet track is really ideal for her.”

Ben Melham (In Secret): “Began fast. Speed was sedate early on but went on mid-race. I feel she struggled in the ground after that.”
