Jockey Quotes - The Shorts

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the $1,000,000 Yarraman Park Shorts (1100m) at Royal Randwick.

James McDonald (Joliestar) : “I said on the radio that she's been going so well. Her work's been so sharp, her trial was great the other day. She's just working like a real sharp sprinter. I thought she'd do that.

“I only had one objective. It was just to get her in a smooth rhythm. I didn't want a stop-start affair. She slid around, albeit deep, but what I was thinking was that Briasa was the one to beat and he was just inside me.

“He wasn't like he was on the fence and I was four-wide. He was not far off me and she was game as anything. She's a solid horse that runs seven furlongs, so she can do that.

“That was thrilling because she deserves a spot in The Everest. I think she'll make her presence felt.

“Well I thought Zac (Purton) had one hand on the trophy. But I might have to take that one hand off and just let him simmer for a bit because there's two golden girls chasing him.”

Joliestar wins the Shorts

Tyler Schiller (Briasa): “Very pleased with his return. He’s had the soft run in transit. Probably just wasn’t fit for the mark today. I thought he ran to the 50m and then peaked whereas the winner went on with it. Really pleased with the effort.”

Tim Clark (Generosity): “She ran out of her skin. Very pleased with her.”

Ashley Morgan (Private Harry): “It was obviously disappointing. He was a little fresh in the gates. Copped a squeeze off Briasa. Felt like we controlled the race well after that. Was disappointing on straightening.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Jedibeel): “Over travelled a little bit behind the speed and that might have told on his finish.”

Jason Collett (Mazu): “Fantastic. Clean from the gate, ran along and stuck on strong.”

Chad Schofield (Ostraka): “He is running well. Didn’t have much luck from the gate today. Had a wide run but stuck on gamely.”

Braith Nock (Dragonstone): “I thought he acquitted himself well. Still some improvement there. Still has his wintery coat. A little bit softer ground.”

Bailey Wheeler (Compelling Truth): “He was good. It will be a step back in grade in four weeks time. It will be his time to shine.”
