Jockey Quotes - Surround Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $600,000 Drinkwise Surround Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

Ryan Maloney (Sunshine In Paris): “I was licking my wounds after Skirt The Law. But I was quite bullish about her prospects here because she didn’t see the winner until late the other day and she got going late, the last 50m. So I thought 1400m from that favourable draw (gate 3).

"I thought if anything last start I was probably a little bit tad too close, it took a bit of the dash out of her. But when I landed where I did I was tickled pink and she done the rest.

“I was happy I had the two main ones (In Secret and Zougotcha) to follow and once she got that split she sprouted wings late. Just great to repay the favour, the opportunities I’ve been getting down here. 15 minutes before the race I was licking my wounds but now happy days.”

Sunshine In Paris wins the Surround Stakes

Tyler Schiller (Ruthless Dame): “She is as honest as they come. I thought she was very brave. We sat deep the trip. I thought she actually got into a great rhythm. Came into the race like the winner and the other one just dashed late. I think she will be very strong up to a mile.”

Hugh Bowman (In Secret): “I think she has run up to her first up performance. They are a good bunch of fillies and she narrowly missed today.”

James McDonald (Zougotcha): “Super performance. She just tugged early through freshness being first up. Nice to know there is plenty of improvement in her.”

Brenton Avdulla (Fireburn): “Face value a little bit disappointing. She got back in a muddling run race. The way she began she wouldn’t have been far away from a low draw. Jury is out.”

Brett Prebble (Madame Pommery): “She didn’t jump brilliantly. I had to go back a little bit further than I wanted to. Tempo came out of the race and they went quite slowly. She pulled a bit. Gave me a good turn of foot but had too much work to do.”

William Pike (Sheeza Belter): “A bit of a patchy run race. She ran really well.”

Tim Clark (North Star Lass): “Did a bit of work. Gave me a nice feel throughout the run. Whether she has come up or looking for more give in the ground.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Revolutionary Miss): “Great run. Hit the line really well. She is on target out to the mile and be suited.”

Sam Clipperton (Cinderella Days): “I thought she acquitted herself beautifully again. Probably just doesn’t quite have the match practice in that grade as yet. Holds her own at the top level.”

Dylan Gibbons (Wolverine): “Much improved effort. Might be back on track now.”

Regan Bayliss (A Lot More Love): “A bit flat second up today. See how she pulls up today. She is better than that.”

Chad Schofield (Razeta): “The speed just came out of the race at halfway. She is a horse that you really want to keep flowing and building on. We weren’t able to do that today.”
