Jockey Quotes - Roman Consul Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $300,000 TAB Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Tommy Berry (King’s Gambit): “It’s hard to think I’ve only been back riding a week and a half and I find a horse of this quality. Obviously I’ve had a lot to do with the Snowdens for a very long time. Henry Field and Newgate Farm, the colts syndicate and obviously Gooree who I’ve ridden Group 1 winners for before (Speak Fondly winning a Flight Stakes) and this felt just as good as that.

“There’s only one way, you’ve got to really switch him off. We actually jumped and the first few strides he wanted to go for me so I checked him a little bit, which we lost a length doing. But he dropped the bridle well for me then.

“We had too much room in the run, no one wanted to go to the fence so it just gave him that bit of free running. I think if he had a horse in front of him he would’ve dropped the bit a bit better. We all know how good he is this colt and he just had to put it all together. He did today.”

Ryan Maloney (Mexico): “Great run. I thought he ran really well.”

Rachel King (Ozzmosis): “He was pretty naughty in the gates today which probably didn’t help him. He still ran a super race stepping up in grade.”

Jason Collett (Namesake): “He has gone well. Ran out of room late. Was finding the line well with the blinkers on.”

Nash Rawiller (Barber): “He was a fraction disappointing I thought. Probably time to put the blinkers on him.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Celestial Legend): “Really good run. Had to get him over at the start and came back getting him into the clear. He did his best work the last part. He is going to enjoy 1400m and maybe even a mile. The Autumn will see the best of him.”

Tim Clark (Royal Tribute): “Really good performance. He showed plenty of fight when he was headed. Looking forward to getting him over 1400m.”

Zac Lloyd (Balkans): “He is a lovely horse. In time I think he will match it with these guys. He’s really building to be a nice horse. He’s still learning. Good effort.”
