Jockey Quotes - Five Diamonds

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the $2 million Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Tommy Berry (Ellsberg): Gee I had it won after a furlong. He got into such a lovely rhythm for me. He quickened at the right time before the corner. I thought I’d try to get a few of them off the bit. The only thing I was worried about was how firm the track was.

“He didn’t feel as comfortable as what he did last Saturday when I galloped him on the grass with a bit of juice in it. It just shows how tough he is. I could have gone another furlong and held that second horse off. 1800m is probably not his trip but hsi quality got him over the line.

“Gerald was a massive supporter of my brother. I didn’t ride a lot for Gerald but Nathan did. I think Nathan’s first ride in the Slipper was for Gerald so he’s been a big part of our careers. I don’t ride them all the time but obviously very happy to get the call up to ride this guy and once again my manager did a great job finding the right one.”

Ellsberg wins the Five Diamonds

Dylan Gibbons (Sibaaq): “Deserved to win. That hurts a bit.”

Hugh Bowman (Laws Of Indices): “He was very brave.”

Sam Clipperton (Ayrton): “He was disappointing. I thought with the way the race was run myself and the eventual winner would fight it out. But my horse was gone on the corner. A bit of a head scratcher."

Glyn Schofield (Milford): “Didn’t quite handle the corners this way around. Got pushed off the corner and was very uncomfortable coming for home.”

Jay Ford (New Mandate): “Tip top debut run. Can only improve.”

Rachel King (Uncle Bryn): “He has run superb. Did well to make up that much ground off a very fast tempo.”

Jason Collett (Longvillers): “Great first run in Australia. Went back from the gate and he finished it off well.”

Regan Bayliss (Diamil): “Superb run. He is just going to keep improving this horse.”

William Pike (Rebel Rama): “They had us off the bridle a long way from home. Still stuck to his guns in the straight but hard to make an impact.”

Brock Ryan (Ita): “She tried hard but probably too much of a pressure race for her.”
