Gluyas Hoping To Strike Gold With Derby Prospect In Guineas

By Ray Hickson

Trainer Andrew Gluyas has designs on turning Goldrush Guru into a dual Derby winner so he says it’s important the three-year-old measures up in Saturday’s Group 1 $750,000 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

The Victoria Derby winner has impressed Gluyas as he’s stepped up in distance this campaign with his closing third in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) confirmation he’s on the right track.

But he’s not taking the task lightly as the Adelaide trainer says he has plenty of respect for the likes of multiple Group 1 winner Broadsiding who was placed in a Cox Plate.

“After winning the Derby we wanted to give him an opportunity in a Group 1 mile and he raced quite well but he was always going to be at his best beyond that,’’ Gluyas said.

“He hit the line super, perhaps he didn’t get the greatest luck in running but I thought he was quite gallant.

“His form is quite good coming through the Australian Guineas and he’s definitely looking for that 2000m plus.

“This was always going to be a highly competitive race but Jamie (Melham) is very positive about him.”

There’s a bit of an Australian Derby flavour to Goldrush Guru’s pedigree.

He’s a grandson of Proud Guru who was the mother of 1998 AJC Derby winner Gold Guru, which was trained by Gluyas’ father-in-law and former training partner Leon Macdonald.

Goldrush Guru has been in Sydney for over a week and appears to be adjusting to racing clockwise, something Macdonald’s 2008 Victoria Derby winner Rebel Raider didn’t do in the following autumn.

“We think he’s shown us enough that he has the attitude for the Sydney way of going,’’ he said.

“You never know until you put them under pressure and we’ll find that out.

“We were still learning about him even on Derby day and he’s come up in form so it’s exciting times. I couldn’t be happier with him moving into Saturday.”

Now he’s stepping to the 2000m, Gluyas would expect Goldrush Guru to be comfortable settling handy to the speed from barrier seven.

The colt was on the third line at $5.50 with TAB on Wednesday, and he’s $4.50 second favourite for next month’s ATC Derby.

“He’s got the ability to put himself in a spot and the capacity to sustain his runs,’’ Gluyas said.

“That’s what he showed Derby day and hopefully that can continue in his next couple of starts.”
