ROYAL RANDWICK – BEST BET: Race 10 # 5 – TAVI TIME

Trainer Kris Lees (Pic: Steve Hart)

Super consistent galloper from the Kris Lees stable who, despite being a beaten favourite in the Big Dance, comes off a successful spring and summer campaign that ended with a Group 3 Summer Cup win. Fitter for two trials and the 1400m fresh is ideal for him. Last time in he was beaten at 1400m first-up but it was at Rosehill and he drew wide so went right back and just made ground without threatening. He then won second-up with James McDonald on board. This will be a different scenario from a much softer draw, he’ll be closer in the run and in a race that should suit him tempo wise. Can’t see him running a bad race and he’s hard to beat.

ROYAL RANDWICK – NEXT BEST: Race 4 # 2 – ZEITUNG

There’s probably few runners in this race that has been set specifically for it but the more you look at it this Godolphin filly has been. She went a month between runs into the PJ Bell over 1200m two weeks ago and didn’t have the best of luck as she ran on from the back into a close fifth. It showed she’s ready for the 1400m now and it’s a trip she proved very effective at last spring winning over the trip at Flemington in The Vanity. This race is no harder quality wise than last time and if she is set to peak in this race then she will take plenty of holding off.

ROYAL RANDWICK – SECTIONAL STAR: Race 9 # 9 – GENERAL SALUTE

Has produced big finishes to win both runs this preparation and he needed to in order to pick them up last time in the Group 3 Star Kingdom at Rosehill. In that race Punter’s Intelligence showed he ran the meeting’s fastest last 600m of 34.05 and the last 200m of 11.31 when charging down the middle from third last on the turn. The Randwick 1200m start is a lot kinder than Rosehill so drawing out isn’t a big deal, and he’d probably prefer it to allow him to balance up and hit the line. The 5kg rise will test him out but he should get every opportunity to be breathing down their necks again at the finish.

KEMBLA GRANGE – PROVINCIAL PICK: Race 8 # 2 – LAST COMMAND

Took on stakes company in two starts after a first-up win last preparation but the bar is lower for his second run back this time around. Had to like the way he hit the line when resuming at Hawkesbury two weeks ago as he rushed into third place. Noticeably took a little bit to wind up once he was pulled to the outside but he made plenty of ground in quick time late. That says the rise to 1500m is in his favour and gets in with 1kg less with the use of a 3kg claimer. Drawn the middle and Kembla should suit so he’s entitled to be right in the finish.
