Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

By Nick Berney

ROYAL RANDWICK – BEST BET: Race 4 # 5 – WODETON

He was ultra-impressive on debut, running fast time/sectionals, and posted the best figure of any two-year-old this season. The colt was a victim of circumstances last start when 35 days between runs in the Silver Slipper (1100m) after racing wide and having the pace/bias against him. He maps to have every possible chance with a significant barrier change, and James McDonald rides again. In addition, he has key attributes and a superior turn of foot/closing speed relative to his rivals.

ROYAL RANDWICK – NEXT BEST: Race 5 # 3 – MARE OF MT BULLER

She had multiple factors against first-up at the same track/distance, and her effort had merit. The four-year-old wasn’t suited to the sit/sprint race shape, was checked/blocked at a critical stage, but to her credit, she hit the line solidly running fast closing splits. She follows a pattern where she produces her peak figures, drops in weight, and a senior rider goes on.

ROYAL RANDWICK – SECTIONAL STAR: Race 8 # 11 – STEFI MAGNETICA

She resumes from a 119-day spell and looks wound up for this after the stable has changed up her trial pattern. The mare should’ve won first-up last preparation and raced well in the elite grade all campaign. She has produced some of her peak figures fresh, and although she will need luck, she has the late strength to run over the top of her opposition.

HAWKESBURY – PROVINCIAL PICK: Race 2 # 7 – TOMMY THUG

The import is now in his second Australian preparation, and he should’ve won first-up at Newcastle. Further, he was blocked for a run for the entire straight and went to the line never fully tested. He finally lines up in a race with a genuine anticipated tempo, and the rise to 2000m is also ideal. Ready to win.
