Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

ROYAL RANDWICK – BEST BET: Race 8 # 3 – WAR ETERNAL

War Eternal is in career-best form, and his last two performances have been full of merit. He produced a peak figure at this track/distance two starts ago and then had too much to do at Rosehill a fortnight ago. The gelding had the pace/bias against him and had to make a long-wide sustained run before savaging the line to finish third. The clock backed up his visual late strength with the five-year-old running one of the meeting's fastest final 200m splits, and he held his action well through the line. He can settle closer with a significant barrier change and has multiple winning figures.

ROYAL RANDWICK – NEXT BEST: Race 4 # 9 – CHARMING LEGEND

Keen on him at the price after an impressive debut win at Kensington 31 days ago. The three-year-old wasn't suited to the sit/sprint race shape, but once he got his mind on the job and built momentum, he savaged the line. Further, he clocked the meeting's fastest final 200m split, went through the line full of energy and did it in style, pricking his ears late. He has come in on a smart base figure, and all key indicators suggest he can only step off that performance, with the mile being ideal second-up. In addition, he'll need some luck from the draw, but he looks above Midway grade.

ROYAL RANDWICK – SECTIONAL STAR: Race 2 # 5 – DETENDU

He steps sharply in grade here but has always promised ability, and his last start win had merit. The three-year-old chased a fast tempo, travelled well into the straight, and when challenged, he immediately responded before pulling away from his rivals to score. He showed late sectional strength; with Punter's Intelligence recording, he ran one of the meeting's fastest final 200m splits in 12.22. He maps to have all the favours and is open to further improvement.

NEWCASTLE – PROVINCIAL PICK: Race 8 # 14 – COHESIVE

She was impressive first-up and went to a new level at Newcastle when bolting in by almost four lengths. She was run to suit but knuckled down, accelerated and went through the line full of energy. Further, she did it in style, and her overall time rated well relative to the day. She is drawn wide, but that suits her pattern, and she has the closing speed to run over the top of her rivals.
