Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

By Nick Berney

ROSEHILL GARDENS – BEST BET: Race 1 # 2 – Celestial Legend

He has quality and profiles well for this event with a much more positive race setup. After being a victim of circumstances due to a wide draw, the colt's debut performance was full of merit. He was restrained early, wasn't suited to the slow tempo and had to make a long-sustained sprint with nothing to bring him into the race. Further, he hit the line hard and clocked the meeting's fastest final 400m/200m splits. He can settle closer with a significant barrier change, and all key indicators suggest he can only improve from his first-up run.

ROSEHILL GARDENS – BEST VALUE: Race 10 # 6 – California Surreal

Is another runner who can be ridden aggressively early to take up a much more prominent position second-up. The Snowden trained galloper's first-up run had hidden merit at Gosford, where the form guide will read she finished seventh but her effort was solid. She got too far back in a farcical tempo and had to make her run through the inferior ground. To her credit, she clocked some of the meeting's fastest splits and the late market trade also suggested she would improve from that run. The mare is suited to the bigger track, dry ground suits, and she can perform above current market expectations.

ROSEHILL GARDENS – SECTIONAL STAR: RACE 6 # 5 – Rediener

Had too much to do last start at Gosford and flashed home for third, running one of the day's quickest final 600m sectionals in 33.92. The three-year-old brings a dominant ratings profile to this assignment and drops 2.5kg relative to his last start after the claim for apprentice Jasper Franklin. Additionally, this will enhance the gelding's key asset in acceleration and expect him to appreciate the bigger track.

DUBBO – COUNTRY PICK - Race 3 # 7 – The Hanger Cat

Was heavily backed $4.5-$3.5 late in the trade eight days ago at Scone and was brave in defeat. The gelding was ridden up early, always faced the breeze in a fast tempo on a day where no leaders won, and he stuck on honestly. Moreover, the other on-pace runners faded, adding a bonus to his performance. He is coming out of time/sectional merit races this preparation and will be hard to hold out.
