Cummings Has Legio On Notice For Overdue Return To Form

By Ray Hickson

Godolphin trainer James Cummings is wary usually consistent galloper Legio Ten is starting to string a few unplaced runs together and has put the four-year-old on notice for his assignment at Rosehill on Saturday.

The gelding, who has never started longer than $4.80 in his 14 starts to date, will be second-up in the Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (1200m) having finishing midfield behind Dollar Magic at Scone when resuming.

Legio Ten’s last win was at Rosehill back in December where he ran down Dollar Magic to score.

“He’s trained beautifully so there’s absolutely no reason to think he won’t improve vastly off that first-up effort,’’ Cummings said.

“Just a little query that he’s now run unplaced three in a row.”

There was merit in Legio Ten’s effort at Scone as he clocked the fastest last 600m of the race, running 33.69 (Punter’s Intelligence) along possibly the inferior ground near the fence to be beaten 2-1/4 lengths.

Cummings said Saturday’s race appears to set up kindly for Legio Ten, $8 with TAB on Thursday, to run up to his best.

“He’s in a race with good pressure and he should be able to enjoy sitting many lengths off the lead and steaming home,” he said.

“We’ll be looking for him to do that, but there’s a little bit of pressure building on the horse too.

“But we’ve got to be hopeful and keep the faith with him.”

Lightly raced three-year-old Pisanello was early favourite at $4 with TAB to improve on his record in the Bisley Workwear Handicap (1100m) after a barnstorming come from behind win at Scone.

That was in a Class 1 on the first day of the carnival but Cummings was impressed with the gelding’s performance and said he’s earned the right to step up in class.

“The horse is going really nicely, he was beautifully held up for that sprint at Scone,’’ he said.

“We are doing everything we can to bring him through his grades nicely.

“He’s trained beautifully since Scone and I can see him running another nice race at Rosehill.”

The well named Mogwai, out of a mare called Gremlin, is being given another chance to measure up to Saturday company in the EGroup Protective Services Handicap (1500m) after a fighting heavy track win at Kembla second-up.

Mogwai was safely held in similar grade back in the summer on the back of his maiden win but Cummings said he’ll have every chance to be competitive with his two runs under the belt.

“He’s nicely fit now and it’s the right grade to be tackling,’’ he said.

Legio Ten's first-up run at Scone on May 18

“It’s a bit of a leap from the provincials straight to a Saturday, but I feel like he’s a horse on the way up even though he’s still learning to put it together.

“We are throwing him in the deep end here, but the pressure that goes with it might be the thing that keeps bringing him on.

“Hopefully, he can keep adding to the race smarts that he’s built so far.”
