Cummings Gets Tactical For Broadsiding's Guineas Redemption

By Ray Hickson

A likely tactical advantage is something trainer James Cummings would like to exploit as star Godolphin colt Broadsiding aims to get back on top in Saturday’s Group 1 $750,000 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Broadsiding was beaten in the Randwick Guineas two weeks ago, just as former Godolphin topliner Anamoe was before he turned the Rosehill version into a one horse race three years ago.

It’d be asking a lot for Broadsiding to repeat the margin but Cummings said, while drawn barrier nine, he sees an opportunity for James McDonald and the colt to repeat the result.

“At first glance, it would not be the stable’s intention to be any quieter with the horse this weekend,’’ Cummings said.

“I think the set-up is inviting him to yet again take up a position.

“He’s not an easy horse to go on by, so from that perspective if he was able to land in a good spot from that draw I don’t think we’d want to give that away.”

In the Randwick Guineas, Broadsiding sat third behind a strong pace set by Tenbury Wells and he fell half a length short of reeling in Linebacker at the finish.

While Cummings concedes there is still a small question mark on the 2000m, despite running a safely held third in the Cox Plate in the spring, he says Broadsiding, $1.90 with TAB on Friday, won’t have any excuses on the score of readiness.

“The horse was involved in a race that was somewhat disruptive, run along so fast at Randwick in the Guineas,’’ he said. “

“Whilst he lost the race, I thought he ran very well. One thing that fast pace was able to do is to bring that horse right on.

“I just know he’s been humming since that Randwick Guineas, it was a good run and it’s brought him on third-up ready to run the best race of his campaign.

“This Rosehill Guineas gives him another good opportunity at set weights against his own age, one of the last chances he will get.

“He’ll be ready to go, if he can stretch his brilliance to 2000m.”

Cummings isn’t as enthusiastic about Tom Kitten’s outside gate in the Group 1 $1m The Agency George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

But he’s seeing the bigger picture with an eye on next month’s Doncaster Mile with the last start All Star Mile winner.

“He hasn’t got the best of draws, particularly in a race where the pace doesn’t look flash on paper,’’ he said.

“Horses like Gringotts and Royal Patronage look like they can run the race to suit themselves.

“But it’s a time-honoured lead-up to the Doncaster, two weeks out, at weight-for-age.

“He’ll no doubt have to give up something of a start at the top of the straight, but I think Tom Kitten brings the flex of that stylish win in the All-Star Mile to Sydney.”

Broadsiding runs second in the Randwick Guineas

The only time Tom Kitten has tackled the Rosehill 1500m resulted in a close third in the $10m Golden Eagle in the spring.

“I like that he comes into this race third-up, he’s going to have a bit to do because of the draw but he’s going to run a race,’’ Cummings said.
