Chandon Golden Rose Bursts With Class At Rosehill Gardens

The first of Rosehill Gardens’ biggest spring races – the Group 1 $1 million Chandon Golden Rose – is the major feature on day two of the record-breaking $66 million Sydney Everest Carnival this Saturday.

A field of 17 three-year-olds including four of Australia’s best fillies line up in the $1 million Chandon Golden Rose on a 10-race program that includes four Group races.

Saturday’s highly sought-after Group 1 Chandon Golden Rose is followed later in the Carnival by the $10 million Golden Eagle also run at Rosehill Gardens, on Saturday 29 October, and the inaugural running of the $2 million The Five Diamonds on 5 November.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said the $1 million Chandon Golden Rose was a pivotal race early in the spring.

“Saturday’s field with 17 acceptors for the 20th running of the Golden Rose is amongst the strongest we have seen in the history of the race," Mr Ross said. “The quality and depth each year of the very best three-year-olds targeting this race continues to cement it as one of Australia’s most important and influential.

“Saturday’s field includes Group 1 winners of a Golden Slipper, Sires' Produce, Champagne Stakes and Blue Diamond Stakes alongside the cream of Australia’s rising three-year-old stars.

“The Chandon Golden Rose has also in recent years been keenly watched by TAB Everest slot holders, further adding to its standing and interest in the early part of the Sydney spring.’’

Godolphin, aiming to win a fifth Group 1 Chandon Golden Rose since 2012, saddles up the first two favourites for in-form trainer James Cummings. Filly In Secret with jockey James McDonald ($3.20-$3 on TAB) and colt Golden Mile for jockey Sam Clipperton ($5-$5.50) head early TAB betting.

Only one filly – Forensics in 2008 – has won the Chandon Golden Rose since the race was re-established in the Sydney spring in 2003. Amongst the fillies running on Saturday is reigning Longines Golden Slipper winner Fireburn ($10) for trainer Gary Portelli and jockey Brenton Avdulla.

If Fireburn won the Chandon Golden Rose she would become the first horse in line for a $5 million bonus by returning and winning next’s Golden Eagle as a four-year-old, and completing the Rosehill Gardens golden trilogy.

She’s Extreme trained by Anthony Cummings and ridden by Tommy Berry ($10) and Paris Dior for Peter and Paul Snowden and jockey Blake Shinn ($17-19) make up the quartet of fillies.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained colt Jacquinot ($7.50) with Damien Lane in the saddle is another colt high in early markets along with Best Of Bordeaux ($14) for trainer Kacey Fogden.

The Group 2 $400,000 Racing and Sports Golden Pendant, Group 2 $250,000 Ned Whisky Shannon Stakes and Group 3 $200,000 Furphy Colin Stephen Quality are also on Saturday’s strong card.

Full fields for Saturday’s Rosehill Gardens meeting can be found here and full TAB Markets for all races can be found here. The Group 2 $400,000 Racing and Sports Golden Pendant offers not only vital black type but is also a further pathway to further Sydney Everest Carnival races, including the $2 million The Invitation.

Other Group races this Saturday continue pathway races into the Carnival including the Group 1 $1.5 million TAB Epsom, Group 1 $2 million Moët & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes and Group 1 $750,000 Furphy Heineken Metropolitan.
