ATC Honours Longest Serving Members On Bob Charley AO Stakes Day

Australian Turf Club honours a stalwart of Sydney and Australian racing along with a special group of the Club’s Members at Royal Randwick this Saturday as part of a long weekend of racing events and celebrations.

The Listed $150,000 Bob Charley AO Stakes is the feature of a 10-race card at Royal Randwick this Saturday before a free community raceday at Warwick Farm on Monday’s public holiday in Sydney.

Saturday’s third running of the Bob Charley AO Stakes honours the former Chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, who was also inaugural Chairman of the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Board and inaugural Chairman of the Australian Racing Board.

Mr Bob Charley AO

The meeting coincides with Australian Turf Club’s annual celebration of its longest serving Members, including those who have been with the Club for more than 50 years.

A total of 19 Members – including seven of those who will attend Royal Randwick this Saturday – mark 50-plus years.

Nine Foundation Female Members of the Australian Turf Club who have been with the Club for more than 40 years will also be in attendance on Saturday.

Australian Turf Club Chairman, Matthew McGrath paid tribute to Bob Charley along with the group of Members passing special milestones this year.

“Our 50-year plus Members, Life Members and those who were our first female Members are part of the very fabric of Sydney racing and our Club," Mr McGrath said.

“The annual Australian Turf Club Members Celebration Lunch recognises our most loyal and longest-serving Members – a group which represents the lifeblood of one of the world’s most successful Thoroughbred racing clubs.’’

The Listed Bob Charley AO Stakes has attracted an 11-horse field and a highly competitive opening TAB betting market – with five horses vying for early favourtism between $5 and $6.50 Fixed Odds.

The Mark Newnham-trained Dragonstone to be ridden by Tom Sherry was the first horse backed into favourtism at $6-$4.20 with TAB. Surreal Step for trainer Brad Widdup and jockey Chad Schofield has also been backed early – $6-5.50.

Three other horses are at $6-$6.50 – Mr Mosaic (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou and jockey Reece Jones), The Bopper (Kris Lees and Dylan Gibbons) and Much Much Better (Sara Ryan and Alysha Collett).

The 10-race card on Saturday has attracted 141 entries. Full fields for Saturday’s meeting at Royal Randwick are available here and full TAB Fixed Odds markets for all 10 races here.

Australian Turf Club continues its celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. Heritage items and special displays of Her Majesty’s 70-year reign including her visits to Sydney racecourses will be set up along with historic pictures on LED screens across Royal Randwick.
