Zamex Heads Down Highway In Search Of Back-To-Back Wins

By Tony Megahey

While eight-time TAB Highway winner Matthew Dunn appears weighted to continue a series winning vein with talented Zamex, Danny Williams and Cameron Crockett pose genuine threats at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Dunn had nominated Zamex and promising Care To Think for a TAB $60,000, 1500m Class 3, but has accepted only for the former, who again will start favourite for Ty Angland. Zamex, an Eagle Farm winner, reinforced the prolific Dunn Highway formula, dominating a class 2, 1400m episode with 57 kg by a widening 1.3 lengths at Rosehill two weeks ago on a good 3 rating. The three-year-old Cheval de Troy (NZ) gelding goes up a kilogram into a class 3 and, according to Dunn, will relish the extra distance.

Multiple Highway winner Danny Williams is represented by O’Lordy, who won a Rosehill episode last month, and promising Mister Marmalade who will be fitter after a finishing 2.5 lengths behind Zamex last start, and suited out to 1500m.

Crockett has a high opinion of The Frick, rating him city quality amidst a powerful winning double at Dubbo, and will thrive at 1500m. However he is untried on rain affected tracks.

The concern for the trainers, is the present heavy nine rating at Rosehill Gardens although clearing weather is likely to promote an early upgrade. Zamex is pronounced favourite in early markets, despite an extreme outside draw.

“Logically he’ll be hard to beat off that strong win last start, out to the 1500m should benefit the way he finished off, and he’s been placed on soft going,” Dunn offered from his Murwillumbah base.

“Care To Think has returned in good order, we’d nominated for two races but we haven’t accepted. We had some bad weather up here, but not like other areas, but importantly we haven’t missed any track-work.”

Dunn is enjoying a super season with 89 winners both sides of the border, listed success, and regular metropolitan doubles.

Numerous last start winners and a near capacity field, makes for one of the strongest Highway races this season. Dunn, and Matthew Dale with nine Highway wins, continue to dominated the series.
