Wonder Mare Winx Eyes Off World Record At Royal Randwick

Australia’s own sporting icon Winx continues her farewell Sydney campaign at Royal Randwick this Saturday where she will aim to win her fourth consecutive TAB Chipping Norton Stakes – and break a world record in the process.

The world’s equal highest-rated horse, Winx will set a new world record of 23 career Group 1 wins if she takes out the Group 1 $600,000 TAB Chipping Norton Stakes.

The mighty mare is a $1.08 TAB fixed odds favourite to also record what would be a 31st consecutive victory.

Saturday’s TAB Chipping Norton Stakes at Royal Randwick is one of the final times Winx’s multitude of fans will be able to witness her race live.

Australian Turf Club will hand out free blue and white Winx flags, whilst fans can also take commemorative photos at the Winx welcome wall.

A range of Winx souvenir merchandise including hats, T-shirts, drink holders and commemorative pins will be on sale.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing Services and Membership, James Heddo, said: “Winx is a once in a lifetime horse and fans travelling from far and wide will not have many more chances to see this great mare race live.

“With the prospect of a new world record which may never be broken, fans shouldn’t miss this opportunity to witness live on track what will be another rare moment of Australian sporting history.”

Happy Clapper, trained by Pat and Wayne Webster, is a $7 second favourite in the TAB Chipping Norton Stakes, with the remainder of the field at $34 or longer.

Saturday also sees the running of the Group 1 $500,000 Surround Stakes for the three-year-old fillies. It is the second time the race will be run as a Group 1, with the Chris Waller-trained Fiesta and James Cummings’s Godolphin runner Pohutukawa heading TAB markets at $5.

In a strong and wide open field, Mark Newnham’s highly promising Nakeeta Jane is next in the market at $5.50 with TAB.

The path to Sydney’s iconic race – the Group 1 $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper – also continues this Saturday with the running of the Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Skyline Stakes for colts and geldings and the Group 2 $200,000 Liberty International Underwriters Sweet Embrace Stakes for the fillies.

Godolphin’s Microphone is the $3 TAB favourite ahead of Castelvecchio for Warwick Farm trainer Richard Litt and the Chris Waller runner Accession (both $4) in the Schweppes Skyline Stakes.

The powerful Godolphin stable also has the early favourite in the Liberty International Underwriters Sweet Embrace Stakes, with Amercement at $3.90.

The Group 2 $200,000 Guy Walter Proven Thoroughbreds Stakes and Group 3 Optus Liverpool City Cup add further black type to Saturday’s strong nine-race card.

The Royal Randwick track was rated a Soft 5 at 9am on Thursday, following 41.6mm of rain over the past seven days.
