Winx To Face Full Field In Apollo

By Brad Gray

Winx will kick off her autumn campaign in The Star Group Two Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday and has drawn barrier 3 in a full field of 14.

Global Glamour is a dual acceptor with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable telling media earlier in the week that the Group Two Light Finger Stakes is the preferred option.

Winx is chasing 14 straight victories as she builds towards smashing the $10 million prizemoney mark.

It’s the first leg of a four run campaign for the star mare which includes the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes (25 Feb), Group One George Ryder Stakes (18 March) and the Group One Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (8 April) on the second day of The Championships.

Winx galloped over 1000m on Tuesday morning in preparation for her first-up assignment with regular jockey Hugh Bowman on board.

“She galloped in company with Preferment and had the edge over him in the concluding stages and we thought both horses worked very well,” a statement from the Chris Waller stable read.

“Hugh and Chris are both happy with where she is at this preparation and her fitness ahead of her first-up run this Saturday in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick.”

Winx will do a final piece of work early Thursday morning, which will be covered by Racing NSW. Make sure you follow @racing_nsw on Twitter (from about 5am) to catch all of the live action.
