Winx Has Never Trialled Better

By Brad Gray

Hugh Bowman declared that Winx has never trialled better ahead of her autumn campaign after stepping out at Rosehill Gardens this morning in a 900m trial.

“We were pleased with her. We didn’t ask her to do a whole lot this morning but it’s as probably as good as she has trialled in her career and she’s pulled up well and she’s moving well,” Bowman said.

Winx finished third to Music Magnate

Trainer Chris Waller was also happy with this morning’s workout ahead of her resumption in four weeks times in the Apollo Stakes (Feb 11).

“She began well put herself into the trial, travelled comfortably and was never really let off the bridal by Hugh,” said Waller.

“She wasn’t out there to break any records or keep her winning record intact. It was simply a preseason game for her. And to make sure she goes through her early fitness regimen the best way possible.

“She is right on song. She is as fit as she needs to be. She is still about 24 days from her first-up run so there’ll be little bit of fine-tuning that takes place over that period but where she’s at I’m very happy. She’s got a good covering over her body. She’s not too light, or too heavy. She’s enjoying things.

“We don’t let her fitness get away too far. It’s important not to have her too heavy because when they are heavy they carry a lot of extra weight on their joints and tendons. She could race in two weeks' time if the right race was there."

The five-year-old mare, who has won 13 straight, will trial again in a fortnight time before tackling the Apollo, Chipping Norton, George Ryder and “the big grand final” Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the second day of The Championships.

“The four race preparation gives us longevity. It’s not about racing every week, it’s just as important that we keep her racing for years to come.”

“There’s been no real changes since last preparation. She has maintained her weight and her attitude is great.

“We don’t need to make her go faster, just keep her the way she is and she’ll keep winning.”
