'Westies' Target Tamworth Meeting (Monday)

By Geoff Newling

Dubbo trainers might take a major hand in this Monday’s $20,000 Shay Brennan Constructions Benchmark 60 Handicap – Heat of the Rising Star Series (1400m) at Tamworth.

The Bruce Parker-trained Yes Zariz was the benchmark ratings top-rater among the 13-strong acceptors with 65 points and garnered the 63.5kg topweight from the handicappers.

Connie Greig’s Underground Blues (57pts) also comes off successive seconds at Wellington and Bathurst to receive 57.5kg.

The western interest doesn’t go unnoticed by new Tamworth Jockey Club general manager Damon Sullivan and he likes the prospects of Yes Zariz particularly.

“He’s got good form,” Damon Sullivan said. “He was second to Lancelot at Mudgee four starts ago over 1405m when he beat Murraguldrie, who won last Friday,” he continued.

“He looks a good chance on that form and then there's the likes of locally-trained Our Masquerade (Craig Martin) 59.5kg, Rockatorio (Sue Grills) 59kg and Slippery Eel (Michelle Fleming) 55kg. Slippery Eel wasn’t far off them in the 1200m here the other day and 1400m looks right up his alley. He will be a lightweight contender.”

The running rail will be out 3m for Monday’s meeting.
