Vale Sam Kavanagh

Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of Newcastle trainer Sam Kavanagh, aged 38.

Sam passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning having battled cancer.

His last runner, Sharpen The Knives, was a winner at Armidale on December 8, leading throughout to win a maiden at its 14th start.

He trained his first winner in Adelaide in 2012 and prepared seven stakes winners including the Scone Cup of 2015 with Tales Of Grimm.

Kavanagh is survived by his partner, Kelly, and their 11-year-old daughter Sienna.
