Sun Shines On Miami Dade For In-Form Widdup

They're keeping it in the family – and proving a pretty formidable team. Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup clinched the sixth win of his brief career with favorite Miami Dade at Scone on Tuesday, with brother-in-law Christian Reith in the saddle.

Reith gave Miami Dade ($2) a superb ride, and the gelding always looked the winner in running in the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1600m).

The five-year-old gelding didn’t give his backers any cause for concern, comfortably defeating $11 chances Miss Tickles and Crossing Guard.

Widdup took out his licence only a few months ago, and hit the ground running. He scored with his first starter Junglized on Canberra’s Acton track in late May, and hasn’t looked back.

Miami Dade was his sixth winner from 18 starters – and Reith has been aboard in all of those victories. Widdup withdrew the Commands gelding from Monday’s Forbes Cup in favour of the Scone assignment, and also decided against stablemate Lunar Spin running to rely on his eventual winner. Lunar Spin is an acceptor for Thursday’s Kembla Grange meeting.

Widdup also opted to put blinkers on Miami Dade, a former member of the sizeable Godolphin team, who notched his fourth success from 21 starts.

Miami Dade had raced twice in town since resuming for Widdup, and clearly appreciated a decent drop back to country company.

Widdup also started recent Goulburn and Canberra winner Chilcotin at Tuesday’s corresponding Moruya meeting. Ridden by Adrian Layt, $3.60 favorite Chilcotin finished third to Irenic in the Benchmark 60 Handicap (2010m).
