Staying Trip Suits Irenic Down To The Ground

Goulburn trained gelding Irenic heads to the coastal climes of Moruya today looking for an overdue win. Trained by Mark Gee, Irenic has been steadily building fitness since resuming in June and is now getting out to a favoured trip.

Irenics’ last two efforts have delivered very competitive results with minor placings at Dubbo and Goulburn respectively in similar company. The Ad Valorem gelding is a proven staying type who has only missed a place once in six starts over this type of trip and Gee believes what you see is pretty much what you get with him.

“He definitely has pleased us since his last run. He is pretty limited but still an honest horse”, Gee said. Gee remains bullish about Irenic’s chances of a top-three finish. “He is an each-way chance, it would be great if he won, but I’d be happy with a nice second or third placing”.

Irenic has shown a liking for the Moruya track in the past with two placings on his resume at the venue, both of those results secured over staying trips. As well a good draw, the gelding renews his great association with in form apprentice Rachel Hunt, who notched a win and a minor placing at Kembla Grange on Saturday. Gee says her booking boosts the gelding’s chances.

“He should be handy on speed from the draw and Rachel knows him well. She has won on him previously.”

Hunt has teamed up with Irenic in ten of his last twelve starts and they make a mean team having secured a win or a place in six of those ten pairings. Irenic jumps from gate two in the Birds of Fire Wines Benchmark Sixty Handicap over 2010 metres at Moruya. The horse is $4.20 into $4 on TAB fixed odds.
