Star Colt Caravaggio To Be Set For The Everest

By Brad Gray

Coolmore’s star colt Caravaggio is bound for The Everest after a brilliant display of speed saw him take out the Group One Commonwealth Cup overnight at Royal Ascot says Aidan O’Brien.

“The lads have it in their head about The Everest in Australia in the autumn (our spring) so that’s why we didn’t want to be hard on him now and he is only a three-year-old. It’s a long way to get through a year,” O’Brien told Racing UK.

That was after O’Brien had suggested that there was still plenty left in the tank for the son of Scat Daddy, the same sire as fellow The Everest hopeful Lady Aurelia.

“He was asleep today and wasn’t woken up. He is a very natural horse and we are delighted,” O’Brien added.

“He is brave and we always knew he was brave.”

O’Brien has always maintained that Caravaggio, now unbeaten in six outings, is the fastest horse to ever pass through the Ballydoyle doors having produced some sizzling pieces of work.

When queried about whether Caravaggio still held this mantle after the race O’Brien responded “no doubt”.

Newmarket’s Group One July Cup is likely to be Caravaggio’s next start before having a break to focus on The Everest at Royal Randwick in October.

Sent around an odds-on favourite, Ryan Moore had to ask the now two-time Group One winner to find and he pulled out plenty to reel in talented Godolphin-trained duo Harry Angel and Blue Point.

“I had to wake him up to do it. It’s the first time he has been asked to do it and he responded very well. I think he’ll come on again from that,” Moore told Racing UK.

“He is very good and it’s the first time he has been asked a serious question.”
