Speedy Neutrality Has Got Gears

By Brad Gray

The irony in Neutrality’s name is that he doesn’t appear to possess that gear.

The two-year-old colt showcased brilliant sustained speed on debut at Rosehill to take out the opening race on the card and the most obvious question to ask jockey Damian Browne was how he compares to Legislation, who the veteran hoop also guided to victory recently for Team Snowden.

Neutrality was always in control

“He felt like a more natural two year old than the last bloke. He jumped and wanted to run through the bridle the first furlong, but mid race he came back to me, pricked his ears and when I gave him a squeeze on the corner he gave me a nice feel,” Browne said.

“They are two different sorts of horses. Legislation is a really laid back type and this bloke is a bit more get up and run. There is plenty more improvement to come from both of them having their first starts and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.”

The Sebring youngster trialled at Wyong exactly how he raced on debut, showing exceptional early toe to take up the running.

“I think he was probably just too good for them over the first 100m. I got a couple of cheap sectionals (after that) so he was entitled to give a good kick but then he started to have a look around too. I had to give him a flick behind the saddle to concentrate.”

“You never win a race in the first 100m though, it’s always the last 100m.”

Team Snowden, who are widely regarded as the best two-year-old conditioners in the country, if not the very best, have always had a high opinion of Neutrality revealed the stable’s racing manager Jackson Beirs.

“Pete has always thought from very early on that he was a good style of horse and he has justified that today,” Beirs said.

“He is a big free-rolling type of colt and I think once he learns his trade a bit more he won’t be so aggressive out of the gates. He has done a good job to hold on today because he wasn’t screwed right down fitness-wise.”

So how does Neutrality compare to those still in the garage at home for the Snowden stable?

“They can’t do any more than win so at the moment he is up there with the best of them.”
