Punter's Intelligence Wrap - San Domenico Stakes Day

Kibou put on a dominant display in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) but it was terrible luck for connections afterwards when they found out he has bone chips in his near fore knee that require surgery and he will miss the spring carnival.

The three-year-old went to a new level doing it on both ends, and Punter’s Intelligence recorded the sectional breakdown of his performance.

Further, the race rated highly relative to the day, and the decisive margins enhanced the quality.

He led at a genuine tempo running the first 700m in 42.40, which was approximately 3.5-4 lengths quicker than the Midway Handicap (1300m), and he sprinted away from his rivals at the top of the straight to run a solid final 400m split in 23.08.

The Waterhouse & Bott runner is still learning but hopefully he will be back better than ever in the autumn.

Golden Mile who was resuming, was outstanding in defeat, beating the rest easily, and has come back improved.

The Godolphin galloper was run to suit, but that was negated due to him settling in lane one, which was a disadvantage on Saturday. Additionally, he ran the race’s fastest final 600m/400m/200m splits in 34.22/22.79/11.66.

He is still lightly raced, will benefit from the race experience, and the stable has the blinkers up their sleeve.

Basquiat had two soft trials leading into this event, and he was honest. Moreover, his key sectional was between the 400m-200m mark, where he clocked 11.37 before peaking on his run over the final furlong. Watch for him over a further distance.

A quick mention of Lethal Thoughts who was well beaten but ran on well, running 12.03 for his final 200m.

We saw an upset in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) which was run at a good-even tempo with Cannonball running the first 500m in 29.83.

Victor Sweet Ride, who had a fitness advantage, was perfectly ridden by Chad Schofield, and he maintained a solid finishing speed running the race’s second quickest final 200m split in 11.73.

Spacewalk loomed to win after consecutively sprinting the entire meeting’s fastest 400m-200m split, but again his manners were costly.

Buenos Noches hit the line hard, clocking the race’s quickest final 200m sectional in 11.59 and Nettuno tried hard in defeat.

The well-fancied favourite Best Of Bordeaux has grounds to be forgiven after having factors against and Promitto was ok first-up.

Shades Of Rose is flying and has improved again from a ratings perspective.

Her overall time in 1:10:23 was slick under the conditions historically, and after chasing a fast tempo, she still ran the race’s fastest closing splits. Continue to follow her.

The BM 100 Schweppes Handicap (1400m), won by Irish Flame, was run at a farcical tempo, with the first 800m run in a leisurely 50.99, which was approximately 14 lengths slower than the TAB Highway (1400m) for that section.

Aleas was mathematically out of the race after being restrained back to last from a wide draw but produced an eye-catching run that was full of sectional merit.

The five-year-old gelding clocked the entire meeting’s quickest final 600m/400m/200m sectionals in 33.77/22.38/11.39. Watch for him deeper into his prep and over a further distance.

Waterford returned well, entering his second Australian preparation under the guidance of trainer Chris Waller.

He made up substantial ground running the race’s fastest final 600m sectional in 34.24. He has a nice action, looks to have the ability and will only improve off that effort.

A quick mention of Oz Legend and Nictock, who both raced well in their respective races and are ready to bounce back into the winner’s circle.

Fastest last 600m: Aleas 33.77
