It’s that time of year when the two-year-olds start to put their hands up and a well bred Godolphin colt called Outspan did just that despite being unplaced on debut at Randwick.
Stop-start would be a good way to describe his run in the Kia Ora Yearlings @ MMGC Plate (1000m).
After jumping best from a wide gate he found himself some 18m off the leader coming to the 600m where Punter’s Intelligence data underlines the checkered passage he had in the run home.
He’s run the fastest 600m-400m of 10.72 then that dropped to 11.01 from the 400m-200m, still second fastest, as he negotiated some traffic, and ran the fastest last 200m of 11.85 to finish fifth.
The son of Bivouac, out of a full sister to Lonhro, ran the second fastest last 600m of 33.58 which was just 0.07 outside the quickest which was Profitabelle who ran 33.51 with an unimpeded passage.
He should appreciate further than the 1000m with the run under his belt now and given how effective Michael Freedman is with his two-year-olds you can be sure he’ll be placed to advantage.
The winner Knightsbridge has run a 33.87 for his last 600m and the second fastest last 200m of 11.90 as he proved a bit too strong.
Unfortunately, sectionals for Tatiana didn’t track but the fourth-placed filly settled a couple of lengths in front of Profitabelle then made her run with that filly over the last 300m or so.

Dare we say it but Gatsby’s might well be a coming winner if his debut for Joe Pride in the Schweppes Handicap (1100m) is a reliable guide.
A stakes winner early in his career, he’s promised quite a bit but hasn’t delivered on it. Yet. Pride has a habit of getting the best out of horses and he’s set Gatsby’s up to be a real factor in his next couple of starts.
He was conservatively ridden from the wide gate before lengthening noticeably late and running the fastest last 600m of 33.90.
From well back he sustained a good sprint running 10.85 (600m-400m) and 11.03 (400m-200m), both the fastest, and while his run started to come to an end late he still clocked the second quickest last 200m of 12.02.
Gatsby’s has his convictions but this was a positive start to his campaign with the new connections and while you still have to take him on trust he’s earned a little bit to start off.
The race best last 600m was run by $101 chance King Taurus who charged into second place behind Eye Of The Fire, just ahead of Candlewick who was also having her first run for Pride.
Cool Jakey was untroubled in recording his first Randwick win in the TAB Handicap (1400m) and he did it with jockey Chad Schofield gaining a good degree of control.
This is illustrated in lining up his win alongside that of Miss Spacegirl over the same distance.
For a Benchmark 88, Cool Jakey ran his first 800m in a leisurely 47.16. The aforementioned fillies and mares Benchmark 78 clocked 46.52 for the same section of the race. Four lengths faster.
After having his picnic up front, the gelding upped the ante and by the time he’d reached the 200m he’d caught up to the girls which took the sprint out of his rivals.
He’s run 12.18 for his last 200m, only one length outside the race’s best, so he was never seriously challenged.
Behind him the run of Sunshineinmypocket was acceptable but it was impossible for him to make any impact, despite running the race’s fastest last 600m of 34.57.
Hereward handled the rise in class with some style going on to an easy win in the Spelling At Coolmore Mt White Handicap (1600m).
He didn’t lead but sat handy and when the inside run came he sprinted in 11.03 from the 400m-200m (0.03 outside the race best) and his last 600m of 34.44 was third fastest.
That fastest last 600m was run by Willie Oppa (34.24) and he’s also notched the best last 200m of 11.57 in what was a massive forgive run given where he found himself.
A couple more to mention:
- Like Lukey was enormous in the TAB Highway (1600m), easily running the fastest last 600m of 34.95 as he came from an awkward spot through the field.
- Hellsing is looking for a step up beyond 1400m and his last 600m of 34.75 was his race’s best but his last 200m of 12 seconds was the standout as he warmed up late.
