There’s been a boom around the Peter Snowden-trained Beadman since his runaway Group 3 win earlier this year and while he wasn’t successful at Rosehill on Saturday he dispelled any doubts about his potential.
And if the times are of significance the Roman Consul Stakes as a whole could be a handy form race going forward.
Punter’s Intelligence data showed the Group 2 event, won by Hidden Motive from the front in an effort that will probably be overlooked, was run 0.07 faster (just under half a length) than the Nivison for the mares won by Gangsta Granny.
It appeared to the eye that the mares were flying, and they were some four lengths quicker to the 600m, but the three-year-olds had reeled them in by the post.
Beadman, in a late charging second, ran the fastest last 600m of 33.29 in the Roman Consul and his final 200m, once he was into the clear, was 11.14 and that was almost a length and a half faster than the next best.
Not only did he quash any thoughts that remained over whether he’s a wet tracker, he showed he’s on target to be a major player next time he’s seen at the races which is most likely the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Second fastest in the Roman Consul was fifth placed Grand Eagle, and he did a lot of his work in the middle stages running the fastest 800m-400m in 22.50 and kept going to record a last 600m of 33.49.
So he’s run a little better than it might appear and a race like the Brian Crowley (1200m) could be a nice one for him.
There were a number of eye-opening sectionals out of the Nivison over the same distance with runner-up Monte Supreme performing right up to her win two weeks earlier and running the meeting’s fastest last 600m of 32.59.
Unfortunately for those who supported the mare she fell just short.
Given how quickly they dashed early it’s no surprise there were closers from the back and behind Monte Supreme in the run were More Territories (third) and Lady Extreme (ninth) who clocked identical last 600m and 200m splits of 32.61 and 11.11.
More Territories is still early in her prep and can be followed, though she can be a backmarker, while Lady Extreme could be paddock bound but she’s taken some big steps this time in.
It was another on speed masterclass from Nash Rawiller on board Lindermann in winning the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m).
After being fastest out of the stalls, he was kept wide out and didn’t actually take control until past the 1400m and from there Nash just slowed them down long enough to get a breather and he’s run a last 600m of 33.90 which made him tough to run down.
A few made a good fist of picking up ground with Militarize producing a promising effort running home in 33.36, the fastest last 600m of the race, to run fifth.
Maison Louis, the Queensland Derby winner, showed he’s on course to pick up a race this spring with a 33.52 final 600m and he was second fastest for the final 200m (11.23). Kovalica ran a faster last 600m of 33.47 but his run ended late (11.34 last 200m).
A few others to note:
Mogul Monarch ran a slick 33.02 for his last 600m in the final event, just failing to run down Roselyn’s Star and he could pick up a similar race in coming weeks.
Alan Brown Stakes winner Headley Grange (34.17) and fifth placed Tavi Time (34.14) are on target for the Big Dance and you’d imagine runner-up Gringotts (34.62) will be fitter given his two month absence.
Fastest last 600m: Monte Supreme 32.59
