The decision to geld talented three-year-old Just Party appears certain to pay dividends if his resumption in the Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) was an indication.
And it could be seen as a race that got away from him too, had it not been for a change of course needed passing the 200m and another steadier at the 100m he might well have won the Group 3.
Punter’s Intelligence data showed he ran the fastest last 600m of the Guineas in 34.06 and clearly the fastest last 200m of 11.31, which was about a length and a half quicker than the next best.
It was a return to form for the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou trained galloper with his two failures in February leading to the ‘gear change’.
If you go back to last spring he ran very close seconds in both the Tapp-Craig and Callander-Presnell and he was beaten three quarters by Lady Shenandoah in the Ming Dynasty. No doubt he’ll be well supported wherever he goes next.
The winner Media World did the work up front running the first 600m in 36.35, much quicker than the Benchmark 88 horses in the final event who ran 37.73 for the same section.
And in a good sign for the race the overall time was almost four lengths faster compared to that closing event.
It’s also worth noting the run of Modella in fifth place, she had little luck at vital stages early in the straight and has run 34.41 for her last 600m which was second only to the runner-up. She also covered considerably more ground.
Zebra Finch is a youngster looking for more ground and he pulled back the margin on Aerodrome from their first clash by some four lengths in the Clarendon Stakes (1400m).
The Godolphin colt ran on nicely from just off midfield in 34.48 for his last 600m, the race’s best as was his last 200m of 11.46, and being a half-brother to Honeycreeper you’d imagine he’ll appreciate a mile and perhaps further.
He didn’t have the tactical ability of the winner, who sat right up on the speed and ran 34.86 for his final 600m, but there was nothing wrong with the way he finished it off.
A mention also to fourth placed Explicit who ran a much improved race on what he showed on debut against Aerodrome as he was just outside the race best last 200m running 11.49.
Able Willie was comprehensive in winning the Clarendon Tavern Handicap (1100m) first-up from a break clocking a quick 33.75 for his last 600m as Nash Rawiller stole inside runs from the back of the field.
He’s run the fastest 800m-600m (10.82), 400m-200m (10.93) and last 200m of 11.50. He’s clearly enjoyed his day out, interesting to note his second-up record isn’t strong which may be a concern if he races again in the next couple of weeks.
Stayer Quantum Cat is closing on a win if his second-up effort in the Blakes Marine Handicap (1800m) is any evidence.
He’s clearly run the fastest last 600m of the race, 35.29, and it wouldn’t have taken many more strides for him to reel in the winner Jamberoo as he ran 11.40 from the 400m-200m and a last 200m of 11.86.
It was a race controlled by winner who was able to sustain steady sectionals so Quantum Cat’s effort is one to take note of. It must also be said both he and Able Willie can be a shade enigmatic.
Note: There were some anomalies in the sectionals published due to a few horses not tracking correctly.
