Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Golden Eagle Day

It’s hard to come up with a superlative for the unbeaten mare Autumn Glow and it’s equally hard to fault her performance to win the Golden Eagle at Randwick on Saturday.

She covered more ground than most of the field and ran the fastest last 600m of the race in making it eight from eight – there’s not much more she could have done.

Punter’s Intelligence data showed she clocked 36.76 for her last 600m in what was a brutal run home, they covered the 1500m almost 12 lengths faster than the two lesser grade races over the same journey.

Compared to the opening event, the first 700m was run 24 lengths faster while against the Four Pillars Midway they were some 16 lengths faster so it’s no surprise it was a battle down the home straight.

And it was a real battle over the last 200m with Autumn Glow running 12.76, the second fastest behind Depth Of Character’s 12.72. Evaporate and Modella (12.78) and Panja Tower (12.79) each hit the line well.

It seems she’s got it all. She can handle wet and dry, she can race on the speed or come from well off it and every win has been better than the previous one.

Depth Of Character could well be a nice prospect for The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange later this month and Modella (36.96 last 600m from last midrace) continues to race well in good company and you’d think one day her time will come in a stakes race.

Meridiana found herself in an impossible position in the Four Pillars but the fact she was able to get so close on the line speaks not only to the run she produced but her potential and we already know she's well above average.

She's run 35.49 for her last 600m and considering they didn't exactly hurtle along in the race she's done an amazing job.

That last 600m was about a length and a half faster than the next best and she's done it while covering an extra 8m compared to the winner Sonofdec who settled midfield on the fence and gained a run through inside horses.

The four-year-old was only second-up so John Sargent should be able to find a suitable race for her to atone.

Newcastle's The Hunter meeting shapes as a likely target for stayers Huetor and Firm Agreement who were both excellent in different ways in the Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m).

Huetor showed a return to form with the blinkers going on as he ran into fourth with his 35.58 the fastest last 600m of the race. It's a bit of a take on trust situation but the Beauford over 2300m may well suit him.

The same can be said for Firm Agreement, who was placed in the Australian Derby last season, although his effort wasn't quite so obvious. From the tail he's run 35.63 for his last 600m in finishing ninth.

Wouldn't be too hard on Jellicious in defeat in the Precise Air Handicap (1300m), she found herself back last midrace and with the leader winning it was always going to be tough for her.

She's run a solid 34.73 for her last 600m, under a length outside the meeting's recorded best set by Rapbidash (34.59).

It must be said the meeting's fastest last 600m was probably run by Brave One in the Bisley Workwear Sprint (1100m) but his sectionals didn't track. To the eye he was some four lengths off the winner Pokerjack (34.68) at around the 400m and has run that horse to about two lengths.

So we can say with some certainty he's run a faster last 200m (Pokerjack 11.97) and estimate that he's run a faster final 600m than the winner.

Fastest last 600m: Rapbidash 34.59.
