Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Epsom Day

Both Briasa and Jimmysstar served notice they’re on target for the $20m TAB Everest, and stand as threats to Ka Ying Rising, as they dominated the Premiere Stakes over the Everest course last Saturday.

In doing so the pair showed the different assets that stand them apart and, depending on how the Everest is ultimately run, make them capable of winning the nation’s toughest sprint contest.

Briasa stopped the clock at 1:07.98, his barrier enabled him to track the leaders and relax and be there to pounce as he did when they passed the 200m.

Punter's Intelligence data shows the grey’s overall last 600m was a slick 32.93 and he’ll be third-up into the TAB Everest where a favourable draw would be a huge boost to his chances given his tactical ability.

The meeting’s fastest last 600m went to runner-up Jimmysstar who clocked 32.48, some three lengths faster than the winner, after having to settle last in the seven horse field.

He jumped with the field but there was no option for him to push on and not be trapped wide. When they turned he was some 10m behind Briasa as he unwound with a turn of foot that makes him dangerous in an Everest, particularly if he can be ahead of a few in the run.

He’s run 10.52 from the 400m-200m and clearly the fastest last 200m of 11.13 and his build up is also hard to fault.

Jedibeel found his way into the Everest field via his owner Mulberry Racing having a slot and he showed sharp improvement second-up to finish on for fourth, running 33.21 for his last 600m.

The other 1200m race on the program, a Benchmark 94, was run about four and a half lengths slower than the Premiere.

You always expect Disneck to run some smart sectionals and he was in his element with a good track over the Randwick 1200m, his favourite scenario, running 32.88 for his last 600m.

Three others broke 33 seconds and they were Kerguelen (fifth, 32.99), World Alliance (sixth, 32.80) and Green Shadows (11th, 32.98).

The early two-year-old races always capture a lot of attention and while the boys ran about a length and a half faster overall there were two distinct eye-catchers from the fillies’ division.

Incognito ran the fastest last 600m of the Breeders’ Plate in 33.18 and showed nice improvement from his official barrier trial. Behind him the run of Artaneous is worth keeping in mind, his sectionals were a bit upside down but he’s run 33.46 to be second best.

It was an all the way win to Shiki in the Gimcrack Stakes but third placed Masvingo and fourth placed Oh Yes She Did stamped themselves as horses to keep an eye on for the future.

Masvingo ran 33.43 for her last 600m, she’s run the fastest last 200m of 11.60, while Oh Yes She Did posted the fastest last 600m of 33.42. She started her run earlier so it was noticeable she felt the pinch a bit late.

Of the four mile events on the card, clearly the slowest was the Group 1 Flight Stakes so it was always going to be hard to beat Apocalyptic when she landed outside the leader.

She’s run 33.75 for her last 600m and done it comfortably. Within The Law, who ran 33.65, clocked the meeting’s fastest last 200m of 10.99 as she rallied late and she’d be a real force up to 2000m.

The Flight was run about 16 lengths slower than Autumn Glow’s TAB Epsom and add an extra length against the Benchmark 94 mile won by Perfumist.

So the win by Attica in the Dulcify, run only about nine lengths slower than the Flight, had plenty of merit as he’s rounded them up running 34.88 for his last 600m, some four lengths faster than the next best and he looks like 2000m will be up his alley.

Easily the run of the race out of the Group 1 Metropolitan was the fourth-placed More Felons, who you could argue was beaten by the barrier.

He’s turned last and scorched home in 33.66 for his last 600m at the end of the 2400m trip, he was the only horse to break 11 seconds (10.96) from the 400m-200m and did an amazing job to finish as close as he did.

Fastest last 600m: Jimmysstar 32.48.
