Punter's Intel Wrap - The Everest

Consistency throughout the race went a long way to winning The Everest for Redzel and, once again, Chautauqua’s slow first 200m has cost him. The Grey Flash was the only horse to break 33 seconds for the last 600m (32.98) in the Everest but it was the first section that proved vital. Punter’s Intel data tells us that Chautauqua’s first 200m was run in 14.43 seconds – compare that to the leaders Houtzen (13.13) and Redzel (13.22) and you can see the task he sets himself. Redzel’s last 600m was a full second slower than Chautauqua but that ability to hit the ground running and be closer to the pace is proving decisive. Chautauqua, just inside the 800m, was 30m behind the leaders and it was simply mathematically impossible for him to win. Vega Magic also had a bit of a tale to tell after The Everest, he covered more ground than any other runner in the 1200m race, running 1207.1m which was 3.6m more than Redzel. His last 200m of 11.61 was bettered only by Chautauqua. In the Sydney Stakes, also run over the 1200m, it was hard to miss the finish of Group 1 winner Impending who clocked 32.87 for his last 600m after giving away some 19m at the 800m. Impending was one of only four horses to break 33 seconds for the last 600m in races beyond 1000m. Obviously Chautauqua was one and the other pair were two-year-olds Spin and Stunts who both ran 32.91 seconds. Stunts managed to run 10.51 seconds for the 400m-200m before knocking up slightly late. There were some interesting PI facts to come out of the two country races on the program. In the Highway Consolation, Super Star Bob ran third despite covering 10.1m more than the 1400m while Zamex (fourth) was the only horse to break 34 seconds for the last 600m (33.91). In the Anniversary Highway, that rails run was the difference between winning and losing for After All That with the runner-up Suncraze covering 6.2m more than the winner. Suncraze ran 34.27 for his last 600m, the quickest of the race, but the extra ground was costly. Fastest last 600m (1200m or above): Impending 32.87 Most ground covered: Who Shot The Barman +17m (in a 2600m race).
