Pomelo Slight Favourite For Provincial Championships At Rosehill

By Mark Brassel

Talented galloper Pomelo has displaced the Gosford-trained Machinegun Jubs as the favourite on TAB fixed odds for the Provincial Championships Qualifier at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

And it could well be all all-girl finish with the first three favourites prepared by women - Pomelo (Gwenda Markwell), Machinegun Jubs (Angela Davies) and Calabasas (Kim Waugh).

Pomelo, from the Gwenda's Kembla Grange stable, is the commanding $3.80 favourite after both she and Gosford galloper Machinegun Jubs (now $4.60) opened as equal favourites. Wyong's Calabasas is the third elect at $9.50

“The favourites are two highly promising four-year-old mares who are both last start winners in the city,” TAB’s Glenn Munsie said. “Overall it is shaping as a very competitive race.”

Better Not Blue, Noble Joey and Princess Posh remain the $6 favourites for the Provincial Championships Final on April 8 at Royal Randwick.

There are two more heats remaining following Gosford – Kembla Grange on March 23 and Newcastle on March 29.
