Jockey Quotes - Surround Stakes

In a nail-biting finish, Nakeeta Jane storms down the outside to deny Fundamentalist a Group 1 win.

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

Josh Parr (Nakeeta Jane): “It didn’t work out nicely at all. We began a little bit awkwardly and as I thought there was a clump of horses that wanted the same spot - third, fourth, fifth, sixth - and it just forced we to get in behind them and get her to travel knowing that she’s got a better turn of foot if she can travel up and dash at them.

“The problem then was how slow they went. It was an absolute walkathon and we are out of our ground, covering ground. The leaders kicked from the top of the hill and she had it all ahead of her.

“I’m so proud of her, how she has performed and how mature she has become. I’m really really happy.”

Brenton Avdulla (El Dorado Dreaming): “She ran terrific.”

Brett Prebble (Seabrook): “Lovely run. Had to go back from an ordinary draw. They went a bit slow and then sprinted home. Her last 200m was her best work.”

Tim Clark (Oohood): “Better. Maybe another run off.”

Hugh Bowman (Fiesta): “I didn’t have much luck from the gate. I did follow the winner but I didn’t have a peaceful run and it took its toll late.”

Sam Clipperton (Fundamentalist): “Huge run. I am bloody gutted.”

Corey Brown (Greysful Glamour): “She was a bit out of her depth.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Miss Fabulass): “We had to give them a start from the outside barrier. She ran on well. Happy with the run.”

Glyn Schofield (Melt): “Disappointing.”

Blake Shinn (Madam Rouge): “She acquitted herself well against the best fillies in the land. It was a good honest run.”

James McDonald (Pohutukawa): “She was a bit stiff. She lacks that early speed and it just puts her on the back foot.’’

Jason Collett (Mizzy): “Great run.”

Tommy Berry (Zalatte): “Very exciting horse going forward. She just got outsprinted on the corner but I loved her last 150m.”

Jay Ford (Symi): “She was alright. She held her own against that calibre of horse. I think back in grade and up in distance she will be competitive.”
