Jockey Darren Jones Passes Away

The New South Wales racing industry is mourning the passing of Tamworth-based jockey Mr Darren Jones who was killed in a three-horse fall at today’s Warialda race meeting.

Mr Jones, 49, fell when aboard favourite Montague Clan in the third event with the horse coming down along with True Commitment (apprentice Melanie Bolwell) and Achanizo (Leanne Henry).

“This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to Darren’s family and friends,” said Mr Peter V’landys AM, Racing NSW’s Chief Executive.

Darren was a very popular jockey in the Hunter & North West Region and had ridden 21.5 winners this season as well as 40 placegetters. His last winner was aboard Maybegrey at Narromine on 2 April 2017.

Racing NSW Steward, Shane Cullen, reported Leanne Henry is suffering a broken collar bone general soreness while Melanie Bolwell was knocked unconscious with both transported to Warialda Hospital for treatment.

Further details will be relayed as they are received.

UPDATE AT 6:45PM: Melanie's injuries have now been classified as serious and is being transported to Gold Coast Hospital with serious head injuries. She has not regained consciousness.
