He's The Real Deal - Gelding Continues Winning Way

He's definitely no phony! Hawkesbury trainer Wayne Attard’s painstaking care with his six-year-old gelding I’m No Phony reaped another reward at Bathurst on Tuesday.

Making it two wins on end, I’m No Phony ($9) led throughout in the Benchmark 60 Handicap (1400m). The only surprising part was his starting price, considering he had done a terrific job at Goulburn on May 22 to land a Class 2 Handicap (1400m) at $16, fighting off all challenges in the straight.

Hawkesbury jockey Robbie Brewer has been an important part of I’m No Phony’s form surge, having partnered him in both victories. As at Goulburn, I’m No Phony bounced out smartly on Tuesday and made all the running under his 60.5kg.

Despite conceding weight to all but one (Elle A Walking) of his rivals, he kept going strongly in the straight and comfortably held out Eva Jean ($7) and $2.30 favourite Prince Of Thebes.

I’m No Phony made an impressive start to his racing career when a strong-finishing third in the Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick in October 2012 when prepared by Gerald Ryan at Rosehill Gardens. However, tendon problems have interrupted his career and at one stage there were veterinary concerns he might have to be put down.

Hobby trainer Attard was having none of that with 'family horse' I’m No Phony and took out his licence again in the second half of 2014 to prepare him. He says the gelding weighs over 500kg and “needs a lot of attention”.

Attard’s “labour of love” is now paying handsome dividends. The rising seven-year-old is doing him proud and a hat-trick is certainly not out of the question next time out.

Whilst entry is by a gold coin donation, children and pensioners along with TAB Rewards members and members of Blacktown Workers Group and Richmond Club all will gain admission FREE of charge.

Plenty of family activities have been planned and the meeting will support various charities including Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
