Gosford Trainers' Premiership Going Down To The Wire

By Brenton Le Grand

We're well into the final month of the 2017-2018 racing season and the local Gosford Trainer’s Premiership is heating up with only four wins sitting between four trainers at the top spot, with the next meeting on Thursday.

Tony Newing currently leads the way with 13 wins for the season including five at Provincial level. He is having an outstanding run of late, with a 20% strike rate over his past 50 runners including his well-performed Charge Forward gelding King Lear, who has won six races from only 11 outings.

Angela Davies closely follows with 10 wins for the season, including one in town when Machinegun Jubs saluted at Rosehill late last year.

Always one to place her horses to perfection, Davies will look to close the gap on Newing when she saddles up Rubel on her home surface this Thursday with comeback jockey Amelia Denby in the saddle.

Also on 10 wins for the season is Kylie Gavenlock who has experienced plenty of success with her gallopers The Big Vin and Nikka’s ‘n’ a Twist of late.

Gavenlock also boasts an impressive recent strike rate of 25% with five winners from her past 20 runners.

Adam Duggan sits on nine wins for the season, with runners nominated for Taree and Scone this weekend. Amazingly his nine winners have come from just his past 31 runners, striking at nearly 30%.

Gregory McFarlane rounds out the top five with seven wins for the season, and with big teams nominated for Gosford, Taree and Scone over the coming week, he’ll be looking to make a late run at the premiership.

These in-form local trainers will have two more opportunities on their home surface, with racing set to continue at The Entertainment Grounds at Gosford on July 19 and July 28.
