Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

By Nick Berney

ROYAL RANDWICK - BEST BET: Race 10 # 4 – Waterford

The import resumes and his ratings/sectional profile always suggested he would return an improved horse entering his second AUS prep under the guidance of Chris Waller. He has trialled well recently at Randwick, over 1045m behind subsequent winner Kokoro and looks wound up for this first-up assignment. Before spelling, he went out on a career peak figure and was eased down prior to the line but still clocked one of the fastest final 200m splits of the meeting. The four-year-old has a fantastic record, a positive race setup, and a solid SP profile relative to his rivals. In addition, he has the key attribute of acceleration, where he can sprint off slow/fast tempos and, with even luck, expect him to be hard to hold out.

ROYAL RANDWICK - BEST VALUE: Race 6 # 14 – Kundalini

She is a nice type and was outstanding in defeat, running second at Randwick in the Petaluma Handicap (1000m) on debut. The filly sat outside the leader at a strong tempo, accelerated and tried hard to the line to beat the rest easily. To further the merit of her performance, the other on-pace runners faded, and the race rated highly relative to the day. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace trained runner will benefit from that experience, has a tactical map advantage over some of her key rivals and represents value. Good each-way.

ROYAL RANDWICK - SECTIONAL STAR: RACE 7 # 11 – Sunshine In Paris

Is a lightly raced improver on an upwards ratings spiral and has a lovely action. The Annabel Neasham trained galloper's last start was full of merit after racing wide throughout and overcoming the pattern of the day. She showed an electric turn of foot, running the fastest final 600m/400m splits of the entire meeting in 33.35/22.26 and savaged the line. The three-year-old has trialled well between runs and maps to have every chance.

ROYAL RANDWICK - HORSE TO WATCH: Race 1 # 2 – Don Corleone

He put his hand up as a leading Golden Slipper contender after an impressive win on debut, where he had to overcome factors against him. Further, the colt raced four-wide throughout, but he relaxed and stormed over the top of his rivals, clocking the fastest final 600m split of the meeting. He ran slick time, and the decisive margins throughout confirmed the quality. He is a typical Peter & Paul Snowden well-educated colt and one of the top seeds for the feature two-year-old races this season.

NEWCASTLE - PROVINCIAL PICK: Race 5 # 5 – Ausbred Rising Sun

Was 40 days between runs last start at Warwick Farm, but he tried hard in defeat, running second and beat the rest easily. However, the gelding had too much to do and just went down in a duel over the concluding stages. Further, he wasn't suited to the race shape and had to make a long-wide sustained run clocking the race's fastest closing splits. Nevertheless, he has a positive race setup, receives blinkers for the first time and brings the clear best last start figure. Hard to beat with even luck.
