'Fresh Is Best' In Tamworth Feature (Friday)

By Geoff Newling

Friday's $30,000 Brett Clarke Music Tamworth Summer Showcase Sprint (1000m) reads like a first-up dash with seven of the 14 runners in the feature sprint having their first runs back from a spell.

Capitano, trained at Tamworth by Jacob Perrett, broke through that barrier when the seven-year-old gelding son of Dane Fever won his second Inverell Shorts in three years two weeks ago. He has won seven of his 24 starts but has yet to win on his home track although he has had just the one start at Tamworth.

Tamworth trainer Mark Mason has Royal Engineer running. Royal Engineer is on a Country Championships campaign and is inked in for Friday’s sprint, then a Country Championship qualifying prelude at Scone before the Scone Qualifier.

“He's been working good, real good,” Mark Mason said.
