'Ears' To A Great Win For Rising Star

Mikayla Weir has ridden into contention in the Rising Star Series for apprentice jockeys with a dominant win in the Godolphin Benchmark 60 Handicap (1280m) at Muswellbrook.

The young hoop piloted Gregory McFarlane-trained Earstheking ($8 TAB Fixed Odds) to a one length upset victory over Flaming Commodity ($12) and short priced favourite Penultimate Star ($2.70).

It was the first time she has scored the maximum of 7 points in the competition which aims to provide opportunities an exposure for apprentice jockeys.

Weir is now in third place with 14 points, just four behind leader Nyssa Burrells.

She managed to hold on to the top spot by earning one point for her ride on Champawi which finished near the tail end of the field.

Blaike McDougall clawed back ground with his third place finish aboard Penultimate Star, earning three points to leave him in second place with a total on 17 points.

Mathew McGillivray and Andrew Adkins are in equal fourth place on 13 points but neither rode today.

The next heat of the Rising Star will be held at Goulburn on 30 January.
