Delays To Editing Process Over For Promising Maher Mare

By Ray Hickson

It’s been a stop-start spring already for promising mare Editing and the Ciaron Maher stable is hoping she can make up for lost time at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Maher’s assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said Editing has had to battle a virus, similar to the one that delayed stablemate Gringotts, since her barrier trial five weeks ago but it's all systems go now.

“She had a quiet trial at Wyong and after that she had a bit of a temperature so we had to back off a little bit,’’ he said.

“We’ve given her a quiet jump out at home so she will improve on whatever she does.”

Editing, $3.60 with TAB on Tuesday, has the inside barrier and James McDonald to ride in the Headwater @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1200m) and Gerard-Dubord said she’s a lightly raced horse the stable has an opinion of.

That’s evidenced by the trajectory she was sent on after her first-up maiden win back in April that saw her contest the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas and Fred Best Classic.

“Her first up run last prep in what probably wasn’t the strongest maiden was very impressive,’’ he said.

“She was beaten a fair way at the Gold Coast but I thought there were excuses and her run in the Fred Best was good.

“She’s always been a filly, mare now, we thought would keep getting better with time. She looks well, she has a good barrier so it’s a good starting point and we’re happy with her.”

Silver Wedding also campaigned in Queensland on the back of a first-up maiden win last preparation and what Gerard-Dubord can say about her is she’s matured significantly.

The sister to Group 1 winner Schwarz returns in the Agency Real Estate Handicap (1100m) and, like Editing, has McDonald and the pole position.

“She ran in the Reginald Allen 12 months ago so we’ve always thought she has some talent,’’ he said.

“She was more mature last prep, she was very impressive first-up then similar to Editing we took her to Queensland and she didn’t like the very heavy track at the Gold Coast.

“After that I thought she ran well. I think the trip away has done her a world of good, she’s never been so relaxed and she’s mature mentally.

“Nothing bothers her anymore which is good to see and she should keep improving.”

The Maher stable starts the Warwick Farm meeting with Peace Bird having her second start in the Inglis Ready2Race Sale Tomorrow Plate (1200m).

Gerard-Dubord said she probably overachieved with her debut fourth at Canterbury, as a $41 chance, where she settled back and ran home to be beaten 1.7 lengths by Benevac a month ago.

“We went back from the gate, we knew they were going to be a bit sharp for her but the last part of the race gave us a lot of confidence going forward,’’ he said.

“The 1200m is as short as she wants but she’s a very push button kind of horse.

Silver Wedding runs third in a Warwick Farm trial on October 3

“Last start she dropped the bridle at the 500m and looked like she was going to finish last, it took her a bit to get going but she was strong late.

“We’ll need a bit of luck but if she can land somewhere in the first half with a bit of cover she will run a good race.”

It’s a big week for the Maher team which has two runners in Saturday’s Group 1 $20 million TAB Everest (1200m) in Jimmysstar and Godolphin filly Tempted.
