Berry Sees No Barrier To Transatlantic's Diamonds Prospects

By Ray Hickson

Tommy Berry isn’t going to let the outside barrier for Group 1 winner Transatlantic in Saturday’s $2m Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill dim his confidence in the horse and says it is just an issue he will need to deal with.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding, who followed his Toorak win over Golden Eagle placegetter Evaporate with a dominant win in the Diamonds Prelude, has the attributes Berry feels are necessary for him to get the job done.

Those attributes are not unlike front-running gelding Lindermann used to offset the outside in the Hill Stakes a few weeks ago.

“I’ve been riding long enough now where you expect them on occasion and you’ve got to deal with them no matter what,’’ Berry said.

“There’s no point worrying about a wide alley, you’ve got to find a way to strategically give him the best run in the race.

“We’re lucky we have a horse that’s on speed so it’s not like we will have to drag back, we’ll still be pressing forward and it’s a matter of where we get in the run.”

Transatlantic, $2.70 with TAB on Thursday, will be trying the 1800m for the first time in the Five Diamonds which Berry says he has to be aware of when plotting his course across.

The gelding is a son of Australian Oaks winner Gust Of Wind, the last horse to defeat Winx, so has pedigree on his side.

Berry didn’t have any troubles in the Prelude where he just landed on speed from barrier three and when asked to go he coasted to the line.

“He’s obviously a quality horse and he showed that the other day,’’ he said.

“He’s got to do it over the 1800m but he was very much floating the other day and waiting for horses to get to him and he had plenty more to offer.

“He starts very well and he’s got great natural speed, he’s not a horse you’ve got to ask to be there.

“Lindermann is a horse that puts himself there and makes his own luck and this horse is a bit the same.

“If the chance is there for him to be ridden with a sit then he’s probably better ridden with a sit. Otherwise we might have to do a bit more work than we would like but he’s the class horse and that’s why he’s the price he is.”

Miss Roumbini was supposed to be Berry’s mount in last month’s Alan Brown Stakes and he’ll finally get the chance to partner her in the Group 2 $500,000 Cincotta Chemist Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).

He rode Manaal in the Invitation two weeks ago where Miss Roumbini was a beaten favourite following a torrid run in transit and likes the way Saturday’s race shapes up for her.

“I spoke to the (Price/Kent) team the other day and hey are keen with how she’s come through her last run,’’ he said.

“She drew a little bit awkward and had a tough run. It’s not as big a field this time and she’s drawn awkward again but she’s a class horse in the field.”

Among Berry’s other rides is Spirit Of Wealth in the TAB Handicap (1100m) and he can only hope the mare is on her best behaviour after a last start win that could well have her back on course.

Transatlantic wins the Five Diamonds Prelude

The four-year-old wore ear muffs for the first time in a Hawkesbury Class 1 and was far too good despite still doing a few things wrong.

“The ear muffs take away a bit of her brilliance but with her barrier manners she needs them at the moment,’’ he said.

“She likes doing things her own way. It was a good win last time, she went back there for a bit of confidence for us, the owners and herself, and she got that and she’s back in the class we think she should be.”
