Australian Turf Club honours bookmakers past and present at Royal Randwick this Saturday for Sydney racing’s third Bookmakers Recognition Day.

The annual raceday, in partnership with the NSW Bookmakers Co-Operative, will highlight five bookmakers with a combined total of more than 225 years experience fielding on Sydney and NSW tracks.

Patrons are able to attend Royal Randwick this Saturday but are urged to continue to monitor official health advice and the latest updates at racingnsw.com.au including NSW Government lists of venues of concern.

Saturday sees the running of the Listed $150,000 Taylor Civic Stakes and one of only two races in Sydney each year over the 3200m trip – the Bookmakers Recognition Day Stayers Cup.

The five bookmakers formally recognised on Saturday – all with a race named in their honour – are Peter Kafataris, Barry Cook, Garry Burgess, Keith Free OAM and Warren Woodcock.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said bookmakers continued to be a crucial part of a day at the track.

“The Australian Turf Club continues to work closely with our on-course bookmakers and the NSW Bookmakers Co-Operative in offering punters the best value in Australia,” Mr Ross said. “This annual raceday recognises not only the role on-course bookmakers play in shaping wagering markets but also the colour and attraction of a day at the track.”

Leading Sydney rails bookmaker and Chairman of the NSW Bookmakers Co-Operative David Dwyer said: “The NSW Bookmakers Co-Op thanks the Australian Turf Club for hosting Bookmakers Recognition Day and acknowledging the integral role bookies have in the racing industry.

“It is also important to recognise not only those members from the metropolitan region but also from wider NSW.”

The opening TAB markets on Wednesday for the Listed $150,000 Taylor Civic Stakes had seven of the 10 runners priced from $5.50 to $8. Ranier for Golden Eagle winning trainer-jockey combination James Cummings and Koby Jennings was equal $5.50 TAB favourite with Wandabaa for trainer Kris Lees and jockey Louise Day.

Wandabaa has since firmed to $5 outright favourite and Ranier out to $6. Bandersnatch (Hawkes Racing and Brenton Avdulla) and Fender for Scone trainer Brett Cavanough and jockey Jean Van Overmeire are at $6.50 TAB, and joined by the well supported Threeood for Joe Pride and Jay Ford.

Jockey Sam Clipperton is looking to win a third Civic Stakes in seven years aboard $19 TAB chance Thorin for trainer David Payne.
